Yesterday we welcomed Nick Sinden of Stanton Williams for the latest in our series of Architecture Talks. Nick gave an insightful presentation about the studio and their ethos, which encourages a strong consideration of quality, flexibility, and the human experience. He then guided us through some of their projects that embody the studio approach, such as UCL East, Rhodes House, Norton Folgate, and the Zayed Centre for Research into Rare Disease in Children. It was also great to hear about the ongoing work at Smithfield which will be a new home for the London Museum – a site that presented its own unique challenges and opportunities. We can’t wait to visit once the project is complete!

Last week we had the pleasure of welcoming Axiom Architects LLP to give the latest in our series of Architecture Talks. They gave a fascinating presentation in which they discussed their key influences and case studies of their work including Snow Hill and Angel Court, both in the City of London. It was great to spend time with their team and we look forward to collaborating with them further in the future

We are pleased to announce that 60 Gracechurch Street, designed by 3XN/GXN for Obayashi Properties, a new addition to the evolving cluster within the City, gained consent at the City of London Corporation’s committee meeting last Friday. TTC has worked over the last year as part of the design and planning team, providing expert townscape and heritage advice, to bring forward a new 36 storey commercial tower for the City. The first of a new generation of office buildings, the most sustainable of its kind, 60 Gracechurch Street will sit on the western edge of the cluster and provide a wide range of public benefits, including a new learning space focused on the heritage of the City. Alongside a high quality and distinctive tower and podium design, the publicly accessible open air roof garden will afford spectacular uninterrupted views west across the Bank conservation area and beyond.
Exciting news for the Square Mile 💥 The City of London Corporation has approved plans for 60 Gracechurch Street – a groundbreaking project set to be one of the most sustainable office spaces in the City, offering: 🏢Over 37,000 square metres of Grade A office space 🤸♀️A range of public benefits for residents, workers and visitors 🧑🎨Innovative design led by renowned Danish architectural practice 3XN/GXN Our CEO, James Sellar, commented: “We have a shared commitment with Obayashi to develop a distinctively designed new landmark office building within the City’s Eastern cluster. We also have a clear aim for 60 Gracechurch Street to be one of the Square Mile’s most sustainable and wellness focused workplaces and today’s decision marks an important step in taking us closer to achieving those goals. There is an acute shortage of office space across London that is able to meet the exacting requirements of the modern occupier and we firmly believe that being able to satisfy that demand is an important component in London’s ability to attract leading businesses and ensure it maintains its status as a world-class city. “We would like to thank the City of London Corporation for their support and we now look forward to working with them and other local stakeholders as we continue to bring forward this exciting project.” 📷 : 3XN/GXN

Big congrats from the whole team at TTC to Sally Whiteside on graduating with her MSt in Building History from the University of Cambridge. A lot of hard work and effective time management - juggling her dissertation over the last year while working at TTC, where she was also promoted to consultant. Very impressive and well deserved!

The Townscape Consultancy’s third birthday gives us good cause to reflect on what the business has achieved in three years. We have expanded from the seven staff working with Peter Stewart when we acquired Peter Stewart Consultancy in October 2021, to the 22 staff we now have, led by five directors across a diverse portfolio of projects. Together we have continued to support clients to achieve consents on challenging and sensitive sites, with more consents achieved in the past year than ever before. We continue to engage with local planning authorities for clients on projects that involve feasibility for tall buildings, works to heritage assets or within their settings, and amendments to existing consents. While Peter retired from active duty in the summer, we were pleased that he was able to join our autumn study trip to Amsterdam and Rotterdam and will remain helping to guide the future of The Townscape Consultancy.

Mecanoo’s mixed use scheme for Hadley Property Group group, as part of the International Quarter London, North in Stratford was given unanimous consent at LLDC’s last committee meeting on Tuesday. Over the past two and a half years TTC has worked as part of the design and planning team with Deloitte to bring forward and exemplar scheme that will provide 6 new buildings of market, social and student housing amongst a network of new landscapes and public squares. The scheme incorporates an innovative approach to bringing buildings of this scale to the ground, through activated podiums and providing spaces for community groups. Situated between Westfield and the East Village the proposals will stitch together one of the remaining parcels of land as part of the Olympic Legacy, an exemplary scheme that leads with its response to the townscape context.
