Americares #HurricaneBeryl Response Team Leader Adam Keehn speaks with CNN anchor Fredricka Whitfield from #Jamaica about our teams work on the ground and our readiness to deliver aid to the most devastated communities. “We have medicine and supplies, hygiene kits and all kinds of resources. We also can make small grants to organizations—health clinics—that need to rehabilitate their infrastructure that was damaged in the storm.” Learn more about our response: https://lnkd.in/ezF4bQwR #Americares #CNN

As #HurricaneBeryl continues toward #Mexico and the southern #US, Americares is deploying an emergency response team from the United States to #Jamaica to support regional relief efforts. The storm has carved a path of destruction throughout the Caribbean, tearing roofs off homes and health facilities and leaving hundreds of thousands without power. At least eight deaths had been reported as of July 4. #Americares emergency response experts are focused on restoring health services for children and adults affected by the storm, including those displaced. Nearly 2 billion people worldwide lack access to essential medicines like insulin, antibiotics and painkillers. This leads to preventable deaths, worsened chronic conditions and increased suffering. These essential medicines are vital for treating infections and alleviating pain, making them crucial for overall health. With our Medicine Security Program, #Americares addresses this crisis by distributing critical medicines and supplies to hospitals and clinics to over 85 countries. In 2022 alone, we supported 14.7 million prescriptions globally. By ensuring medicine security, we save lives and strengthen health systems. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/e5BAry97

As summer kicks off with a nationwide heatwave, we are reminded of the dangers that heat can have on human health. Climate scientists warn that these record temperatures we're experiencing will continue to be more common and intense. This urgency was the driving force behind the HeatWise Policy Partnership Summit held last week at Duke University. The summit brought together over 100 leaders from various sectors including #Americares Associate Director of Climate and Disaster Resilience Nate Matthews-Trigg, MPH, NMCEM, CEM, to develop strategies for making communities more resilient to extreme heat. The Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability will publish a report with concrete recommendations based on the summit’s discussions in order to help leaders at all levels understand how to implement effective heat resilience strategies. #HurricaneBeryl made landfall Monday on Carriacou Island off the coast of Grenada as a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph. So far, the storm has affected an estimated 200,000 people in its path and has forced thousands from their homes. On Monday, Americares reached out to partner organizations in Jamaica, St. Lucia and Dominica to offer assistance. Americares is prepared to deliver medicine and relief supplies in affected communities as well as provide emergency funding to restore health services. Heavy rainfall over a 7 day period has wreaked havoc across much of Central America causing significant flooding and displacing thousands from their homes. As the region braces for more rain and potential hurricane activity, #Americares Emergency Response Team is activating in #ElSalvador. In collaboration with local authorities and the National Directorate for Shelters, Americares is mobilizing resources to assist 1,346 families in 108 shelters. We've prepared 600 essential family hygiene kits to ensure health and hygiene standards are maintained during the crisis. Our efforts are supported by strong partnerships with the Ministry of the Interior, Civil Protection Directorate, municipalities, and local communities, enabling a swift and effective response to the crisis. Imagine seeking health care, but instead, being physically assaulted: That can be a real risk for gay men, who have historically faced significant challenges accessing health care, often encountering discrimination and homophobia. In 1976, John Day, a former Navy parachutist and openly gay man, sought treatment in the Bay Area for a sexually transmitted infection (STI) but instead was attacked by a homophobic physician. John turned to the Berkeley Free Clinic (BFC), where he was treated by Fred Strauss, a bisexual BFC-trained medic. Recognizing a need, the pair joined forces and established a clinic to serve their community. Since then, the Gay Men's Health Collective (GMHC) of the Berkeley Free Clinic has been training local gay, bisexual men and trans folks as volunteers to run an STI clinic for their community. The Berkeley Free Clinic, an #Americares partner for years, received an emergency grant from Americares last winter to move and replace electrical panels damaged by storm water from a leaking roof. Our partnership with BFC and its GMHC is crucial in supporting their mission to provide accessible and respectful health care for the LGBTQIA+ community. We are proud to stand with them and continue our efforts to promote health equity during #PrideMonth and every day. Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/etVvDA2z
