#ClimateChange is increasing the frequency and intensity of wildfires globally, presenting profound health challenges to communities. These fires devastate homes, force families to evacuate, and severely impact air quality, leading to respiratory ailments and other health concerns. #Americares is committed to helping communities adapt to these challenges. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has had devastating impacts on the mental health and well-being of countless individuals. Access to quality mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) services is crucial for communities affected by such conflicts. To meet this urgent need, #Americares has worked with a network of local partners providing these essential services to Ukrainians impacted by the war. Rebecca Carney, MSW, Americares Senior MHPSS and Protection Program Manager for our Ukraine Response, recently conducted a comprehensive training of the World Health Organization's Problem Management Plus (PM+) for 18 partner staff in Lviv, Ukraine. PM+ is a scalable psychological intervention created to help people with depression, anxiety and stress. Learn more about our efforts in Ukraine here: https://lnkd.in/ecnMqDvw

Before and after. Just one month ago, #Americares Ukraine Response Team visited Okhmatdyt Hospital, Ukraine's largest children's hospital, checking in on the life-saving medications that we had provided for patients who have undergone kidney, liver or heart transplants. Yesterday, Russian airstrikes across #Ukraine killed at least 39 people and severely damaged the hospital including critically needed ICUs, operating and oncological rooms and the only oncological hematology laboratory in the country. We have reached out to our partners, offering our support as they take stock of what medicines and equipment may have been lost or damaged due to the attack. They are currently focused on search and rescue, and transferring patients to safe locations. #HurricaneBeryl has left a trail of destruction in its wake as it has traveled through the Carribean into the U.S. Our team on the ground in #Jamaica reports that over 60 health facilities have been damaged. We're receiving requests for medicine, hygiene kits, cleaning supplies, tarps, generators and assistance replacing medical equipment damaged in the storm. In #Texas, our Emergency Response Team has reached out to 112 partners to offer assistance. It is widely reported that over 2 million people have lost power including several health facilities. #ClimateChange poses many dangers to health. One of the most pressing dangers we face is the increased risk of flooding. As global temperatures rise, so does the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events. Flooding can devastate communities, displacing families, destroying homes, and disrupting lives. It also can bring waterborne diseases and mental health challenges. In El Zonte, #ElSalvador, the risk of flooding is an everpresent danger that must be monitored. Thanks to #Americares work, the community is able to detect when flooding may occur from storms or rivers. Learn more about floods and their dangers here: https://lnkd.in/gEzf2fZ3
