🌎 Update: At the UN CBD COP16 Conference in Cali, Colombia, our side event titled "Partnerships for Biodiversity: Supporting Forest Restoration and Conservation Projects 🌳" brought together diverse voices to advance partnerships for forest conservation and biodiversity protection. At #CBDCOP16, October 30 was dedicated as Restoration Day with a full-day agenda in the GBF Pavilion. One of the sessions was "Restoration for & by People: Rights, Benefits and Transformative Change." With a wonderful expert who shared their experiences and the importance of engaging in all levels of society - local governments, conservation organizations, and faith-based organizations sharing the collective vision of contributions exploring the whole-of-society approach. Our director, Mrinalini Rai, stressed the need to embed #humanrights and to support community-led restoration initiatives, including by women, including the need for all of us to understand the intricate connection of ecosystems with biodiversity, flora and fauna, and people and pointing that #plantationsarenotforests as ecosystem restoration embodies not only the economic, but also the social and cultural values. #generationrestoration #RestorHERRights #PeacewithNature UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration UN Environment Programme FAO

Restoration Day at #COP16Colombia brought together experts to advance the cause of ecosystem restoration. The Secretary General Dr Musonda Mumba delivered closing remarks, highlighting the urgent need to restore wetlands which are vital for supporting biodiversity. 🌱 Restoring habitats can help species recover from population declines and prevent extinction. 🌾 Additionally, ecosystem restoration can create jobs and provide benefits for local communities. A few reflections & suggestions: 🖇 There are 3 Rio Convention COPs this year (UN Climate Change, UN Biodiversity, UN Convention to Combat Desertification), all addressing similar topics. Let's pass the #nature & #forest baton to UNFCCC COP30: #CaliToBelem! 💻 Compared to NY Climate Week, discussion of the #AI revolution was almost completely absent from #COP16. Why? One reason might be that NGOs don't have the capacity to engage in the next AI wave of autonomous Agents, and that there is a lack of trust. I think my bet holds true that there were 2x as many business delegates than at COP15, I heard there were 3,000 (final figures after COP). A great chance to integrate private sector more into National Biodiversity Strategies & Action Plans. 💵 Finance is key, and the key to finance are clear policy signals & better public-private partnerships. Let's think of nature projects as infrastructure-level investments: multi-billion, multi-stakeholder, multi-generational. Public-private partnerships need more muscle & innovation, including with #AI. Global funds will only make a difference if they unlock and trigger larger private & domestic public funding flows, while governments tackle the necessary & overdue restructuring of fiscal incentives. 🌍 Great news from #COP16Colombia! “EU announces €12 million support for global biodiversity conservation efforts led by UNDP’s Biodiversity Finance Initiative” -- UNDP As we face unprecedented declines in global biodiversity – with over 1 million species at risk of extinction due to habitat destruction, climate change, pollution, and overexploitation – this contribution will play a crucial role in advancing innovative finance solutions for biodiversity conservation and help countries meet their biodiversity goals. A reality check on Target 2 🎯As of October 28th, 36 NBSAPs were submitted by parties while 2643 Targets were reported by 115 parties. 🌍 Of these, 317 relate to Ecosystem restoration, with the African region leading the way. 🌳🌊 〰 Only 45 Targets represent all of the 3 major ecosystems (inland waters, terrestrial, coastal/marine) with an unsurprising focus on terrestrial ecosystems. 📄 Less than half of these targets are accompanied by main policy measures (self-reported) posing a significant hindrance to achieving Target 2.   While many countries have failed to submit their NBSAP and the data is disappointing, it highlights the support needed to domesticate this global umbrella into transformative national policies.
