Inspiring update below from Cheick Touré, who's facilitating a key meeting on #integration in Togo today. "The integration of postpartum family planning services with #RMNCAH-Nutrition services in several countries in Francophone West Africa has clearly demonstrated that this intervention drastically reduces missed opportunities and nearly doubles the uptake of FP and significantly increases the use of other MNCH services."
1. Check out our Cheick Touré in action below, cofacilitating an "Integration Community of Practice" meeting in Togo to scale up postpartum family planning, MNCH, & nutrition services in francophone West Africa. Postpartum family planning = one of the greatest opportunities to increase modern contraceptive use and reduce unintended pregnancies and pregnancies too closely spaced, which are associated with increased mom and baby morbidity and mortality. In Francophone West Africa, maternal and infant mortality rates are some of the highest in the world. Child malnutrition and stunting rates are very high too. *Only 43% of women here have their family planning needs met, and half of these women in need are postpartum.* IntraHealth's INSPiRE project, funded by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, established the regional CoP to provide technical assistance, advocacy, coordination, and resource mobilization to countries, and promoted the development and implementation of national scale-up plans. This 5th regional advocacy meeting happening now is taking stock of commitments and progress on implementing those scale-up plans, sharing the experiences and lessons learned with other French-speaking countries, and further mobilizing #RMNCAH-N stakeholders and donors by promoting synergies in the countries. Best of luck this week to Cheick and our entire INSPiRE team, and our partners Helen Keller Intl, PATH, Institut de Recherche en Sciences de la Santé (Burkina Faso), Boabab Institute. Thrilled to announce our partnership with the West African Health Organization (WAHO) to strengthen the rural health workforce in #WestAfrica and reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and nutrition health services! https://lnkd.in/eAUmxrEe We'll provide technical assistance for WAHO's health workforce interventions under The World Bank’s SWEDD project. To start, we'll develop a regional policy to strengthen the rural pipeline of health workers who can provide high-quality #RMNCNH health services, and we'll conduct an analysis of #nursing and #midwifery schools in #Benin, #BurkinaFaso, #Chad, #Gambia, and #Mauritania. “Here in West Africa, we still have some of the highest rates of maternal and child deaths in the world, and some of the lowest rates of family planning uptake,” says Cheick Touré, IntraHealth’s West Africa Regional Director based in #Mali. “We don’t have enough health workers to provide equitable access to RMNCNH services, especially in rural and remote areas. All countries in the region have shortages of nurses, midwives, and other professions, and are on the World Health Organization's Health Workforce Support and Safeguards List.” WAHO is protecting the health of people in the sub-region through initiation and harmonization of policies, pooling of resources, and cooperation of Member States. IntraHealth has worked in over 100 countries to develop and strengthen their health workforces to meet community health needs. Together, we can transform challenges into opportunities and ensure every community has access to quality health services! Here’s to a healthier West Africa! #Healthcare #HealthWorkforce #IntraHealth #WAHO #GlobalHealth #ReproductiveHealth #SWEDD #RMNCNH

Picture It: *Skills Labs in West Africa Set to Transform Health Worker Training* In West Africa, the training of nurses & midwives faces numerous challenges. The lack of educational materials is one of the most pressing. Students often struggle to acquire essential practical skills before they work with real patients. See how new skills labs provided by the Classroom to Care (C2C) project, funded by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company, provide a hands-on learning environment where students can develop and refine their clinical skills. https://lnkd.in/gMhEFpbr Statistics underscore the urgent need to improve training & infrastructure for nurses & midwives. In Mali, for example, the neonatal mortality rate is 334 per 10,000 live births, partly due to inadequate training and a lack of health professionals in rural areas. The skills labs make it possible for teachers at health training schools to simulate a variety of clinical situations, from childbirth to neonatal emergencies. So far, C2C has set up skills labs in 9 schools across Mali, Niger, and Senegal, laying the foundation for a workforce that is more resilient and ready to meet maternal and newborn health challenges. Photo 1: Minty Keita, a nurse and instructor at Vicenta Maria, demonstrates clinical nursing care using the Suzie Simone simulator. Photo 2: Marguerite Diarra, midwife and teacher at Vicenta Maria School in Ségou, Mali, unpacks equipment for the school's new competency lab. Photo 3: During the donation ceremony at Vicenta Maria School, a teacher demonstrates how to use the new equipment. Photo 3 & 4: Students at the School for Health Agents (EFAS) in Dosso, Niger use the new equipment to develop and refine their clinical skills before caring for real patients. Many thanks to Amadou Iam Diallo, our communications star based in Mali, for these inspiring photos!
