Because health workers save lives.
About us
IntraHealth International is a global health nonprofit that has worked in over 100 countries since 1979. We partner with governments and local collaborators to improve the performance of health workers and strengthen the systems in which they work so that everyone everywhere has the health care they need to thrive. We focus on health workers. Without them, health care doesn't happen. In May 2024, IntraHealth became a subsidiary of Global Communities, an organization with a shared commitment to saving lives, advancing equity, and strengthening local capacity. For us, #HealthWorkers are the ultimate humanitarians. On #WorldHumanitarianDay we honor all health workers, and especially those we partner with in conflict areas in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and South Sudan. For many health workers, going to work means risking their lives. According to the Safeguarding Health in Conflict Coalition, in places in conflict in 2023 there were over 2,500 incidents of violence against health workers and the places they work, including 49 incidents in Burkina Faso, 41 in Mali, as well as incidents in Ethiopia, Niger, Nigeria, and South Sudan. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/e6TJkXd6 Today and every day we call on policymakers to #ActForHumanity and put in place laws and other measures to protect health and aid workers. Thanks to our South Sudan team for hosting PEPFAR's site visit last week! See more below. Proud our @USAID Advancing HIV & Epidemic Control activity is extending HIV services to female sex workers & other key populations. Today, IntraHealth International was honored to host PEPFAR’s Country Chair for South Sudan, Shawn Wesner, accompanied by Robert Kelly, PhD, PEPFAR Program Coordinator for South Sudan and his team. Shawn’s visits to IntraHealth’s Gumbo Key Populations hotspot and Munuki PHHCC, which are both supported by USAID’s AHEC project, were part of her visit to the country to understand the context, interact with beneficiaries and implementing partners to gain an insight on how PEPFAR activities are implemented in South Sudan. Shawn had a one-one with Female Sex Worker-beneficiaries who shared their stories, challenges and suggested solutions to improve service access and delivery at the sites.

Violence against health workers continues in places in conflict around the world, including in countries where we work. In 2023 in South Sudan, health workers were killed, arrested, and kidnapped, including while administering vaccines. In its annual report, the Safeguarding Health in Conflict Coalition documents attacks on health workers and facilities in 2023 and offers recommendations for ending impunity. ❗Read a fact sheet on South Sudan ➡️ https://shcc.pub/SSD2023 ❗Read the full report ➡️ https://lnkd.in/e6TJkXd6 IntraHealth is a founding member of the Safeguarding Health in Conflict Coalition and currently serves on its Steering Committee.
