An overwhelming majority of students answered the question about making a difference in their community with a negative response, which our Board Member, high school civics and history teacher Patrick Kelly found alarming. “It doesn't bode well for democratic governance or for community health if less than 50% of the population feels they can make a difference. Political efficacy matters — and this shows our students don't have it.” Read more about the results here: https://lnkd.in/edR8xyC8

“Up to 60% of students entering community college are unprepared for college-level work, and the subject they most often need help with is math.” Important read in The Hechinger Report: https://lnkd.in/gsEqRqrg Learn more about the challenges facing #communitycolleges as they work to help students overcome learning gaps post pandemic: https://lnkd.in/eM4i5TJv (via Dr. Michelle Cantu-Wilson)

National Assessment Governing Board reposted this
Executive Director @ National Assessment Governing Board. Public servant, education advocate, parent.
I'm catching up after some family time last week, and as a District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) parent, I think this is a must read. Lauren L. interviewed DMV educators about their academic priorities given how far students fell behind post pandemic and that recovery funds expire in September. In the second half of the piece, Lumpkin dives into math instruction at DC schools where the Chancellor says their approach is built around the idea that all kids can be “math people” (YES!) and placed an emphasis on students problem-solving and working to understand processes, not just memorizing formulas. DC also has the goal of making every 8th grader take Algebra I (high expectations for all!) and is working to make math lessons more applicable to the real world and future careers. Honestly, this piece is interesting even if you're not located in the DMV. https://lnkd.in/e-WztnDY

In the early grades, missing 1 day of school feels like missing more because of how much time it takes for a student to catch up. Check out this graph on soaring absenteeism rates & student achievement in reading. #PoweredByNAEP https://lnkd.in/gcS8pYtR

Data released in May showed only 22% of 8th-graders scored at or above #NAEP Proficient in civics; for U.S. history that number was only 13%. Understanding these subjects is critical to participating in society and living up to our nation’s ideals. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e7TG9Pgv
