NSC is thrilled to celebrate Pride Month with our new Pride Community Group, which helps LGBTQ+ immigrants connect. This new support group is made up of immigrants from many different countries, from Somalia to Mexico. At our monthly meetings, we create community through shared meals, educational events, and art-based activities. In March, our wonderful, creative participants crafted sculptures to tell their stories and share their struggles and triumphs. At the end of May, we made T shirts that represent what pride means to us, then wore them on June 2 while we marched together in Philadelphia’s 52nd Pride Parade! One of our regular participants said that the group “lifted up [their] spirits” and is “a break from everyday life.” Another participant, who was completely new to NSC, said, “The welcome was warm, I hope to participate another time.” We at NSC are honored to witness the strength, beauty, and diversity of the LGBTQ+ immigrant community and welcome the opportunity to stand together. Happy Pride Month!

Thank you, Councilmember, @Jamiegauthier for your support and kind words last night! Also, thank you to Andy Toy for serving as a moderator last night and thanks to @HIASPennsylvannia and Nationalities Service Center for partnering with us for this Immigrant Heritage Month discussion on renting to refugees.
Was honored to give opening remarks today for our Office of Immigrant Affairs’ Landlord Outreach event. OIA and its nonprofit partners are doing the important work of resettling refugees, and they hosted this event to bring more landlord partners into their network. During the event, we heard from landlords who’ve found great, reliable tenants through this effort, while also welcoming newcomers to our city, and also heard from a refugee tenant of what it was like to flee a dangerous situation in his home country and be welcomed graciously here in Philadelphia. For centuries, Philadelphia has been a place where folks from across the world— including my own mother— have come in search of new opportunities. I’m glad we’re continuing to live up to that history by wrapping our arms around our newest residents, and I’m proud of the work our city is doing in this area!

At Nationalities Service Center, immigrants and refugees receive comprehensive supports as newcomers in Philadelphia. In partnership with the Community Design Collaborative, a "town center" lobby was created so that food, education, and childcare could be accessed in one location. It's a lively space that I proudly get to visit each Wednesday, when I'm on-site at NSC. Learn more through this story from 6ABC! https://lnkd.in/e6K_6WCF
