Did you know you can get Medicaid coverage for kids' mental health? Mental and emotional well-being is a critical part of physical health. The mind-body connection affects mood, confidence, social interactions, and motivation. Positive mental health helps to promote the development of critical competencies, resilience, and life skills. Experiencing a range of emotions throughout childhood is healthy. However, if your child consistently feels sad, worried, or isolated, they may benefit from extra help. PHP grantee partner Children First (formerly PCCY) First provides a helpful step-by-step guide for navigating Medicaid coverage for kids’ mental health. Learn more and access the guide (available in 5 languages) on their website: https://lnkd.in/eTX85xk7 Check back throughout July as we continue to share partner spotlights for BIPOC mental health month! #phillyhealth #healthequity #phillynonprofit #nonprofitsupport #communityhealth #philadelphia

On Saturday, Philadelphia Health Partnership was thrilled to join our grantee partner, the Philly Joy Bank, to celebrate their official launch with birth justice champions from across the City. A project developed by the Philadelphia Maternal and Infant Health Community Action Network (PhillyCAN), the Philly Joy Bank is a guaranteed income pilot focused on addressing racial disparities in infant mortality and promoting healthy births, perinatal well-being, and optimal childhood development. The program will recruit 250 pregnant people who live in one of three neighborhoods with the highest rates of very low birth weight births in Philadelphia: Strawberry Mansion, Nicetown-Tioga, and Cobbs Creek. Participants will receive $1,000 of monthly guaranteed income and voluntary support services during pregnancy and for 12 months postpartum. The Philly Joy Bank aims to improve participants’ financial stability, reduce their stress during after and pregnancy, and increase birthing people's autonomy and agency to address family priorities and needs. Today is Juneteenth, the day we commemorate the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation which freed the last enslaved Black Americans in 1865. As part of this celebration, we honor four inspiring PHP grantee partners dedicated to enriching and enhancing the lives of communities of color: New Voices for Reproductive Justice builds power for and alongside Black women, Black queer folks, and Black marginalized people through leadership development, community care, resourcing, and mutual aid. Oshun Family Center provides racially concordant care to Black birthing families and members of the Black community through trauma-informed therapy and maternal health support services for every stage of the birthing journey. The Village of Arts and Humanities supports Black community residents and artists to imagine, design, and build a more just and equitable society. we.REIGN (Rooting, Empowering, Inspiring a Girls Nation) develops future leaders through community- and school-based programming for middle- and high-school aged Black girls. Help us spread the word about our partner organizations and their efforts to advocate for Black Americans in Pennsylvania – share this post so others can learn more! #juneteenth #healthequity #nonprofitsupport #philadelphia #pennsylvania

This week, PHP Program Director Lauren Blair Wechsler attended the 2024 Birth Equity Funders Summit in Chicago. The Summit was convened by Funders for Birth Justice & Equity whose mission is to end inequities in birth outcomes and improve experiences and outcomes for all birthing people by advancing respectful, physiologic care and equitable access to birth workers. It was inspiring to be surrounded by community leaders, government officials, and philanthropic colleagues who are committed to working together to advance healthy, safe, and joyful births and eliminate disparities. Thank you to the conference sponsors, organizers, and speakers who championed the importance of community-based solutions, cross-sector collaboration, and holistic, culturally responsive care throughout the perinatal period. In 2024, Ronald Jean Louis was hired by AFRICAN FAMILY HEALTH ORGANIZATION AFAHO as their new Male Cultural Health Navigator. He provides peer support and case management services. The Cultural Health Navigator's role is critical to helping African and Caribbean men address social and economic drivers of health and connect with care. "Since joining AFAHO, men (young and old) have sought my support with so many health concerns (including some sensitive, male-specific concerns). In a short time, I’ve quickly understood the responsibility I’ve inherited as men are more comfortable sharing health issues and seeking support from another man. I have found my place here at AFAHO and it has redoubled my motivation to serve the community." - Ronald Jean Louis, AFAHO Male Cultural Health Navigator Visit www.afaho.org to learn more about the role of Cultural Health Navigator. #phillyhealth #healthequity #healthequitynow #phillynonprofit #nonprofitsupport #communityhealth #philadelphia

In honor of Men’s Health month, we recognize the culturally sensitive health services our grantee partner African Family Health Organization provides to African and Caribbean immigrants and refugees. “Men do care about their health – but often they face other competing priorities including securing employment, housing, and food. At AFAHO, our health work is centered on preventive health. With the support of our Male Cultural Health Navigator and key male leaders in the community, we engage our African and Caribbean men on the importance of screenings and prevention – know your status, know your numbers – before it’s too late. “ – Dianne Uwayo, MPH, AFAHO Health & Social Programs Manager AFAHO’s health programs aim to: – Improve knowledge and awareness about various health issues affecting African and Caribbean immigrants and refugees. – Help change attitudes and behaviors around health. – Assist clients in gaining access to primary health care services. Today, Philadelphia Health Partnership was honored to co-host a funders forum with the William Penn Foundation and Democracy Funders Network about democracy and civic engagement. Thank you to our speakers - A. Salewa O. from Pennsylvania Voice, Lauren Cristella from Committee of Seventy, and Trevor McNary from the Trusted Elections Fund – for helping to educate us about your work. The dialogue today reinforced that philanthropic investment in the health of our democracy and civic life must extend well beyond election cycles. Funders and civil society can help foster things like a strong news and media ecosystem, effective governing institutions that deliver for people well after their voters are cast, and the kind of belonging and social trust that undergird a healthy pluralist society. Even in the face of this long-term agenda, we discussed critical near-term opportunities in 2024 to foster nonpartisan civic engagement and ensure safe, accessible, and trusted elections in our city and our state. We extend our gratitude to Jessica Richards at the William Penn Foundation for her leadership in organizing this event with PHP and to Emily Thielmann from the Democracy Funders Network (https://lnkd.in/gW4kK472) for facilitating a rich conversation. Follow Pennsylvania Voice, Committee of Seventy, and the Trusted Elections Fund to learn more about work underway to promote a healthy democracy in Philadelphia and Pennsylvania.

Mental Health Awareness Month continues, and today we focus on PHP grantee partner: Voces Juveniles para la Salud Mental (Juvenile Voices for Mental Health). The project is led by Stoneleigh Foundation Emerging Leadership Fellow, Eduardo Burgos Quezada, in partnership with Nationalities Service Center. PHP funded two young co-researchers working on the project: Monica Ocampo and Jorge Reyes. Voces Juveniles para la Salud Mental centers the experiences of Latinx immigrant families to re-imagine behavioral health care for immigrant youth in Philadelphia. The goal is to address structural and cultural barriers experienced by immigrant youth – such as legal status, financial pressures, and language access issues – that increases risks of poor behavioral and mental health outcomes. The project focus includes: · increasing awareness of behavioral health resources available to immigrant and refugee youth and gaps in service provision · assessing available interventions for culturally and linguistically appropriate services · examining evidence-based models and practices Research findings will inform actionable recommendations for Philadelphia’s behavioral health care system. Learn more about how Voces Juveniles para la Salud Mental is elevating youth voice and leadership to improve the well-being of Philadelphia’s immigrant youth and their families.
