Here's a story with heart! Arno and Betty Neben are long-time Nebraska Medical Center volunteers. Betty works with other volunteers to at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Millard to sew the pillows received by heart patients at the med center. The heart pillow kits are purchased through funds from the Nebraska Medicine Guild. The kits are then sent to the church for the group to stuff and sew them together. Arno thought about that when he was admitted last month for heart failure. “Three of the heart valves were shut down and the fourth one was clogged,” says Arno, who would go on to have quadruple bypass surgery on June 28. “When I learned I was needing heart surgery, I thought, ‘Hey, I think I’m getting a heart pillow.’” The surgery was a success, and now Arno has his own heart pillow as a keepsake. “This pillow made it from our living room through manufacturing and inventory at the church to the hospital and now back to me,” he says. Thank you to Arno and Betty and all of our volunteers for everything you do for others! #NebraskaMed #NebraskaMedicine #seriousmedicineextraordinarycare #togetherextraordinary

It recently happened to WNBA star Cameron Brink. Nebraska softball phenom Jordy Bahl also suffered the injury. But for years, the way an ACL tear was repaired was basically the same—until now. Orthopaedic surgeon Matthew Tao, MD, has a new way to fix ACLs and the first patient in Nebraska to have the procedure performed is now a year into her recovery. See how she's doing and what's different:

A hero honored. Family and friends filled the hallways of Nebraska Medical Center to make sure Jaramiah Droescher didn't make his final journey alone. They took part in an honor walk, along with staff from Nebraska Medicine and Live On Nebraska, to recognize Jaramiah's heroism in becoming an organ donor. https://bit.ly/45X4GNG

We recently partnered with Nebraska Community Blood Bank on blood drives at Bellevue Medical Center and Nebraska Medical Center. It's no surprise that dozens of our colleagues came through to help our patients. Dr. Michael Ash, Nebraska Medicine President and Chief Operating Officer, was first in line to roll up his sleeves. Summer is a crucial time for patients who need blood donations. If you’ve never donated before, there’s never been a better time to start. Our partners at NCBB will take great care of you and our patients will be forever grateful. You can schedule an appointment to give at ncbb.org.
