Some of you don't fully understand just how rampant ageism exists when it comes to hiring, promoting, and laying off workers.
I worked as a recruiter/HR for several years. Ageism is one of the few things recruiters and hiring managers openly admit to as their reasons for discriminating against a job seeker or employee.
I've had hiring managers say to my face the following:
👉 "If I hire him, he's just going to retire in five years so why bother?"
👉 "I don't want to train grandma to use a computer."
👉 "You can't teach someone that old anything new."
👉 "Old workers are terrible because they don't listen to anyone younger than them."
You see ageism in how companies hire, promote, and develop older employees.
I am sure folks 45 and up can attest to the challenges they face in the job market and even at work.
The irony is many of these older workers advocate for the removal of the very programs/services in place to protect THEM.
So my advice is to educate yourself, know your rights, and advocate for yourself.
Y'all be easy!
