At the end of last year, KAPSARC hosted an insightful webinar titled “Critical Minerals in the Energy Transition: Exploring Prospects and Addressing Hurdles.” My colleague Jitendra RoyChoudhury did amazing work behind the scenes to bring together experts from think tanks, government organizations, policymakers, and industry leaders to discuss the global minerals supply chain and the impact of critical minerals on electrification aspirations. For policymakers addressing the challenges of increasing supply and access to critical minerals to ensure continued progress toward net-zero ambitions, several key points must be considered to tackle the hurdles in pursuit of energy transition goals: 📜 Ensuring the clarity of policymaking toward a country-specific definition of critical minerals is essential for effective governance. 🔋 Supportive policies and effective regulation can help guide strategic mineral resource planning, especially for battery materials. 📈 The fast-evolving market dynamics of critical minerals require price and risk management mechanisms. 🌍 Geopolitical vulnerabilities are being exposed as a result of certain supply chain concentrations. ♻ Energy transition requires the development of technological innovation, material recycling, and substitution to help reduce the pressure placed on various actors to obtain critical minerals. You can read the full workshop brief through our website: https://lnkd.in/dtxHDnJQ A special thanks to everyone who helped organize this event and to our distinguished speakers and participants for their invaluable insights. 🔗 Driving the Implementation of the EU Critical Raw Materials Act at Raw Materials Week 2024 🧩The EU Raw Materials Week (9-13 December 2024, Brussels) is a cornerstone event for shaping the future of Europe’s critical raw materials strategy. As a vital platform for collaboration among industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders, it plays a crucial role in advancing the implementation of the EU Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA). 🎯The CRMA sets ambitious benchmarks for 2030: extracting at least 10%, processing 40%, and recycling 15% of the EU’s annual consumption of strategic raw materials. Additionally, it aims to ensure that no more than 65% of the Union’s annual consumption of each strategic raw material comes from a single third country, thereby reducing dependency and enhancing supply chain resilience. This week-long gathering is a driving force behind fostering sustainable supply chains, enhancing resilience, and reinforcing global partnerships. 📌 Representing both TETHYS: Trans-Eurasian Gateway and the EIT RawMaterials Inter-Regional Center, I am deeply engaged in discussions to support Europe’s green and digital transitions. Together, we will strengthen initiatives that ensure a sustainable, secure, and competitive raw materials ecosystem, aligning with Europe’s strategic objectives. 📣 Raw Materials Week 2024 is a call to action! Looking forward to reconnecting with colleagues and friends and establishing new collaborations to shape the future of critical raw materials together! ➡️ See the Agenda: https://lnkd.in/dHgjw94x #RawMaterialsWeek2024 #CriticalRawMaterials #EUCRMA #Sustainability #GreenTransition #DigitalTransition #CircularEconomy #Innovation #RawMaterialsStrategy #SupplyChainResilience #EITRawMaterials #CriticalMinerals #Collaboration #SustainableFuture
