Skate your street. Why not? Steep streets can help to get you from A to B, when the right pavement and size of pedestrian area is guaranteed. Talking about sports in cities, it should be interesting to match this into street design. Like thinking of main running routes into the street network, section design and crossings layout. ... Not a criticism, but a genuine question which requires debate. At a time when the local higher education establishment has announced a downturn in student attendance resulting in job cuts, and budgetary problems. Are more Student flats required? Our city has had a swell of Student accommodation approvals recently with several large scale developments already underway. Is this a priority over permanent housing need in Dundee? When we are told that land resource is limited and regeneration is best, is a large number of student units the best use? How much income does the local authority gain from each student flat per annum? I.e. is there any council tax (or similar) and is this more lucrative than housing to the city coffers? Are there the same levvies applied to these developments as would be the case for new build housing? if not... why not? The pressure on local amenities and services caused by the population increase once these flats are occupied must surely be the same? Or is it simply the case, developers no longer make any return on housing due to the poor policies introduced over the last decade leading to potential housing land now being put to better use to generate a higher return? Interested to hear thoughts on the rapid rise of these student mega projects.
Plans to build student flats on the site of a fire-hit former Dundee furniture store could be approved next week. jmarchitects

The new TECA was designed to provide a range of flexible spaces comprising a multi-purpose arena that provides flexibility to host a large range of exhibition, entertainment and sporting events, a multipurpose sub-divisible exhibition hall, and a range of conference facilities. The new exhibition and conference facilities consist of a 9,000 sqm arena to accommodate a maximum of 15,000 people, 6,000 sqm of flexible exhibition space. A further 31,500 sqm, 1250 space subterranean car park doubles as exhibition space for events such as the biennial oil and gas Offshore Europe Exhibition. 10,000 sqm of external exhibition space can also be utilised. A continuous concourse connects all public functions, creating the opportunity to use the building for simultaneous performances or events. This route features merchandise units, bars and food & beverage units activating the ground floor concourse; an animated frontage viewed from the external central square through the dramatic main entrance. It is the scale of the project that takes the breath away. Some random facts: - The new TECA is 30.5 metres high, and just over 418 metres long - It would take Usain Bolt 40.8 seconds to run this length - The area of roof cladding at the new TECA is equivalent to 5 Pittodrie football pitches - The rows of seating would stretch for over 6,000 metres if placed end to end - It would take 89 Olympic swimming pools to fill the Subterranean Space - 8,300 tonnes of steel have been used in the construction of the new TECA - The Arena alone could hold up to 718 billion Smarties The project has been a key part of our practice for over a decade. It has reinforced our growing Arena and Stadia Portfolios, leading to several opportunities in other locations. And our team has become experts in the technical design criteria essential to ensuring the user experience is world-class. Golf documentary with a scary movie introduction? Gamble Sands Resort is quite literally an “out of this world” golf experience, feeling like golf on Mars! With The Land As It Lies documentary series Up River Film & Golf Company strives to capture the essence of golf courses by uniquly depicting each course to the golfing world. Now some may wonder, why does Gamble Sands get a scary movie introduction? 1.) This introduction tells the story of someone growing up in the mid west or east coast, never before seeing Washington golf. The landscapes at Gamble Sands will blow the minds of this demographic of first timers. 2.) The dramatic terrain at Gamble Sands can only be matched with a dramatic introduction. 3.) We wanted to show our versatility when it comes to producing golf documentaries. Each golf course is different, resulting in a different style of documentary. Now… it would be boring if we produced practically the same documentary at every course, right? Enjoy this cinematic experience with architect David McLay Kidd! https://lnkd.in/e8UetWvx

Leeds MSCP, completed 2016 ACME x Leeds Leeds car park façade reinterprets the diagrid motive into an open performative skin, providing natural ventilation and daylight while producing a recognizable identity for the city. Anodised aluminium fins produce an interplay of light and shadow that appears as a diagonal grid pattern when seen from afar. The diagonal pattern is achieved by twisting and rotating the vertical fins. The fins have four different twists and nine different fixing brackets across the façade. The result is a façade that may appear complex yet is formed from the simplest possible components, open and well-ventilated from the inside yet visually interesting from the outside.
