City’s EMS partners with St. Elizabeth to launch paramedicine program Covington is one of two Northern Kentucky cities partnering with St. Elizabeth Medical Center on a 12-month pilot program that aims to reduce avoidable trips to the emergency department and in-patient hospital stays for adults with certain chronic diseases. “Having a partnership with St. Elizabeth really opens the doors to resources that typically a fire department doesn’t have,” Covington Assistant Chief of EMS Gary Rucker said. “St. Elizabeth has a lot of partnerships in the community that will expand what we have access to. This will be very beneficial to our residents here in Covington.” Read more about the program at the link below. #paramedicineprogram #partnership #CovingtonKY #StElizabethMedicalCenter https://bit.ly/41LjKxI

Some Easter reading 🐣 … I have had a quick read of it and with my newly obtained Hospice lens and understanding of the role of hospices and pallative care within the system. It feels like there is a massively missed opportunity here which would support the systems. We know that early support to those who could benefit from pallative care but are not receiving it, would support none admittance via A&E initally and also the subsequent freeing up of the acute bed they inevitably end up in. Systems should prioritise working with Hospices and the benefits that can bring; both to patients having early pallative care and suppprt, and also to the wider system in reduced A&E atttendance and freeing up the subsequent acute beds they end up in. Those working in the frontline do know this issue, but they also have to follow this guidance and priorites with the limited resources they have. So it would have been really helpful if the guidance had more directly identified this priority. Next year maybe ?!? #nhs #hospice

ER Boarding Crisis Worsens for Older Adults, Posing Severe Risks to Health Emergency room physicians are sounding the alarm over the escalating problem of ER boarding, which has reached unprecedented levels, surpassing even the challenges faced during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Among those most vulnerable to the detrimental effects of prolonged ER waits are older adults, who make up a significant portion of ER visits. With staff shortages, bed availability issues, and high demand for hospital services exacerbating the crisis, seniors face serious risks to their health while waiting for care. The situation has been described as a public health crisis, demanding urgent attention and intervention. #ERBoarding #HealthCrisis #AgingPopulation #EmergencyMedicine #HealthcareSystem

So if you translate the advice about what to bring when you come to the ED, it basically boils down to a survival kit and someone to take care of you, because the hospital can’t do it. One night of boarding in the ED once the decision to admit has been made increases mortality. Let me translate that into plain English: boarding patients in the ED kills people. Is that clear enough? Smdh this is sickening and so, so frustrating, because we’ve been warning about it for years. One more time for clarity and emphasis: BOARDING ADMITTED PATIENTS IN THE ED KILLS PEOPLE.

Back in June Royal Bolton Hospital started to test and roll out a major new NHS initiative to improve patient safety. Martha’s Rule aims to provide a consistent and understandable way for patients and families to seek an urgent review if their or their loved one’s condition deteriorates and they are concerned this is not being responded to. 143 hospital sites are taking part in the initiative as NHS England work with the parents of Martha Mills, who died from sepsis aged 13 in 2021, having been treated at King’s College Hospital, London, due to a failure to escalate her to intensive care and after her family’s concerns about her deteriorating condition were not responded to. Martha’s parents are helping to develop materials to advertise and explain the initiative in hospitals across the country, to ensure it is something that all patients, staff, and their families can recognise. Dr. Francis Andrews, Medical Director, said: "We are really proud to be able to take part in such an important initiative that will empower patients to raise concerns about the care of a loved one. “We can never underestimate the value of clear and open communication with patients and their families and we hope this will be another significant step in improving the care we provide." https://lnkd.in/eujZb37J

It was fantastic to learn of the historic deal between the NHS and the Independent Sector to cut NHS waiting lists. This is particularly important for NHS Veteran Aware and #ArmedForcesCommunity patients (Serving, Reservists, CFAV, Veterans and Family members). The agreement will help expand capacity and widen patient choice by setting out how treatments can be delivered from the Independent Sector, with care remaining free at the point of use. Orthopaedics will be a key focus along with support for patients in the most deprived areas, with patients being offered a choice of hospitals for their treatment. The agreement will also encourage the growth and development of the elective workforce ensuring a consistent approach to training and patient care. This article highlights how Freestanding Emergency Departments (FSEDs) make expensive care super convenient for hospitals. They're basically an extension of the less efficient care #hospitals often provide, and a way to lure patients into inpatient admissions. FSEDs aren’t really about serving communities better—they’re about bringing patients to the hospital instead of more appropriate settings. But hey, in #Florida, there’s a better option—our “high acuity urgent care” model at GEMD. We combine the capabilities of an FSED with the efficiency of #urgentcare. We work with payers and providers to prevent unnecessary admissions and focus on value-based, high-quality care. And yes, I know, this sounds like a bit of a self-promotion for GuideWell Emergency Doctors, but honestly, we’re the antithesis of an #FSED! 😉 READ ARTICLE ▶️https://lnkd.in/eGV5V9Z4 Healthcare Brew
