🌡️Climate-smart MSP is essential for the long-term management of marine ecosystems. 🌊The use of climate-related ocean science makes it possible to integrate mitigation and adaptation measures in #MSP to increase the resilience of marine ecosystems and reduce the exposure and vulnerability of coastal communities and maritime sectors to #climatechange. Take a look at the report #UnitedinScience 2023, and follow the current COP28 UAE discussions in the #OceanPavillon to learn more about climate-related ocean science. The 9th #ourocean2024 Conference has been an important opportunity to introduce the network of Mediterranean Experts on Climate and environmental Change, MedECC. Here is a short presentation. The MedECC assessment supports the science-policy interface on climate and environmental change in the Mediterranean. The process to develop the next Mediterranean assessment report (MAR2) will start this Fall, 2024 and will be undertaken in the coming 3 years or so. Building on expert and stakeholder advice and needs, we will assess 🔸 new advances in science, 🔸 the vulnerabilities to climate change and environmental impacts, 🔸 the many opportunities to reduce risks to the affected communities and ecosystems, 🔸 actions that build long term resilience. We aim to inform the implementation of solutions that are consistent with achieving sustainable development and strengthen the link between securing a healthy environment and wellbeing in the Mediterranean. I would like to invite you to find out more, and also directly participate in undertaking the MAR2! contact@medecc.org www.medecc.org/ #OurOceanGreece

Ports are vital spots for international trade, while coastal settlements attract tourists. Türkiye is a good example of such countries surrounded by seas. Every year, millions of tourists arrive in Türkiye abroad ferries, and intense maritime traffic is added to this. 🚢 🏖 Ferry transportation has some adverse effects on the environment. Auxiliary engines may pollute seawater, and their noise is seen as an annoying problem in populated coastal regions. Cold ironing is a green and silent approach to supplying the energy need of ferries, and it is becoming popular as stricter emission acts come into effect to tackle climate change. ⛴ ⚡ Researchers from Istanbul Technical University (ITU) and Aalborg University discuss a two-stage energy management framework of cold ironing for short-berthing ferries. They propose a cooperative cold ironing system integrated with clean energy sources for ferry terminals. Their study sheds light on the sustainability and feasibility of short-distance logistics and passenger transfers. #ScienceSaturdays 🔗 📖 https://lnkd.in/dVqx8QKu

🌊 Marine Spatial Planning contributes to target 14.2 of the UN Sustainable Development Goal 14, to sustainably manage and protect marine and coastal ecosystems. It effectively helps measure the target’s indicator, namely the “number of countries using ecosystem-based approaches to managing marine areas”. 🗺️ In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which together are often referred to as #Agenda2030. The target 14 is dedicated to “Life below water” aiming to “conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.” ➡️ Learn more about how #MSP is connected with all SDGs: https://lnkd.in/dgfVEmA5 UNESCO Ocean | European Commission #marinespatialplanning #SDG14 #MSPglobal

This #WorldSeagrassDay, let's unite in safeguarding our blue carbon treasures. Approximately 10,000 km2 of seagrass habitat occur in the Arabian Gulf, but only three of its species have adapted to survive the extreme temperatures and salinity of this shallow sea. The launch of the #2030SeagrassBreakthrough by High-Level Climate Champions, in collaboration between وزارة التغير المناخي والبيئة Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), and Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) Abu Dhabi, underscores the intrinsic worth of thriving seagrass ecosystems and their profound advantages in combating climate change, preserving biodiversity, fortifying disaster resilience, and advancing the attainment of sustainable development objectives. In the #menaregion particularly, this ecosystem is important as the Arabian Gulf is home to the second largest population of dugongs in the world, after Australia (Dugong & Seagrass Hub). As Rouba Abou-Atieh, Executive Coordinator of CMS Office – Abu Dhabi shared, "Embracing the 2030 Seagrass Breakthrough is not just a commitment; it's a catalyst for global action, aligning with crucial international agreements and initiatives, like the #SDGs, the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and many others. Together, we can conserve, recover and protect these vital habitats for the benefit of present and future generations."
