Today marks the 33rd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act! While Americans with disabilities have made progress toward #inclusion, work still needs to be done to reach true #equality. The #ADA laid the groundwork for the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (#CRPD), which is helping people with disabilities around the world to exercise their #HumanRights. At Humanity & Inclusion, we believe that people with disabilities should have equal access to rights, opportunities, and services and be protected from discrimination, abuse, and neglect. 🎉 Celebrating the Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)! Today is a historic milestone in our journey towards inclusivity and equal rights. In 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law. This law forever changed the lives of millions of people by tearing down barriers and promoting accessibility in all aspects of life. This includes the protection against discrimination for individuals with disabilities by mandating reasonable accommodations in employment, transportation, and more. Throughout these past decades, the ADA has empowered countless individuals - and fostered a culture of acceptance, diversity, and inclusivity. Let's continue to honor the spirit of the ADA by educating ourselves, promoting awareness, and continuing to advocate for the rights and well-being of individuals with disabilities. Together, we can build a more inclusive and accessible world for all. 💙 #ADAAnniversary #InclusionMatters #AccessibilityMatters #EqualOpportunities #CelebrateDiversity #ADA33 #AmericanDisabilityAct

On this day in 1990, the U.S. signed into law the first comprehensive declaration of equality for people with disabilities. The #AmericansWithDisabilitiesAct (ADA) prohibits discrimination toward and codifies the rights to equal access and opportunity for people with disabilities. We celebrate the anniversary of this landmark legislation today, while also acknowledging that considerable obstacles to access, acceptance and equality still exist for people with disabilities. The #UniversityofDenver strives to make its campus accessible and inclusive to all, and pursues a future where stigma no longer exists around disabilities. I pledge to ask, “Do you need any help?” and “How can I be supportive?” Recent, personal experience has taught me that there is no “best fit” solution for supporting persons with disabilities. If you are aware, understanding, accepting, and dynamic in your actions, the right level of support for each person will emerge. Kearney #IDPWD23 #KearneyEnableNetwork #accessability #pledge #support

The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law on July 26, 1990. The ADA was a Declaration of Independence for people with disabilities, guaranteeing comprehensive rights, protections, and access to this large, diverse community. For an example of what an impact granting access by just installing curb cuts on public sidewalks has, check out the story of civil rights activist and pioneer Ed Roberts (https://lnkd.in/eMc_e-R). Thirty years after the signing of the ADA, there are still numerous challenges faced by persons with disabilities when it comes to accessing employment, public spaces, and public services – and still lots of work to be done to address the more subtle ways in which people with disabilities face inequality. But on this date, we celebrate the signing of the ADA, which works with unprecedented scope to prevent discrimination against individuals with disabilities, as well as provide a recourse for them when discrimination occurs.
