#TLevelsWeek: Celebrating employer partnerships! At the Sandwell Colleges, we're proud to collaborate with incredible local employers to provide invaluable work placements for our T Level students. These partnerships give students hands-on experience and a chance to make a real impact in the workplace. Recently, we caught up with Shane Traynor, Co-Owner and Co-Director of Co Arch, a RIBA-accredited architectural firm based in Birmingham. Shane shared his excitement about working with our talented students and how they're set to transform CoArch's social media presence! We have all experienced the disconnect between Architectural education and practice…. ……what do you think is the solution? I am a big advocate for the Apprenticeship model and we are completing our first year of the L7 Apprenticeship in the practice partnering with Oxford Brookes. This growing path to Architecture allows students to earn and learn, whilst gaining experiences of practice to feed back into the University. It’s a mutually beneficial system where practices can support students and use their time and work for areas of research. It has its downsides in terms of longer period and the students need to be well versed in time management but on the whole, I think it is a clear way forward to improve the routes into the profession —— ♻️ Repost so your friends and connections can be inspired too P.S. I strongly believe T Levels are the future. Today as part of National #TLevelsWeek 🙌🙌 we brought 15 employers to interview 59 T Level students from The Manchester College who require placements to complete their qualification. This initiative wasn’t just about interviews; it was about empowering students, building their confidence, and showcasing their potential to future employers. Each student brought enthusiasm, and a genuine passion to experience all aspects of the construction industry prior to deciding their next steps. We were thrilled to see the collaboration in the room, with students taking the opportunity to connect with industry partners and explore ways to enhance their careers. What's most important to you when you're making a hire? 🤔 Not the full "laundry list" of requirements, skills, and experience. These are crucial to finding someone who can be successful in the role you're trying to fill. But I'm suggesting going beyond that. To create a list like renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright shared in his 1943 autobiography. He called the qualities on this list "Fellowship Assets" for the architecture apprentices he was working with that summer. I love this list. I'm working on mine now. Opportunity

NTU students are great! Enjoyed some impressive interactions with our School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment (ADBE) students yesterday. Firstly, the 'Future Practices' exhibition of 'virtual' architectural practices created by Gavin Orton's final year Architecture students. A great display of creativity, innovation and commercial awareness with students working in groups to create their own architectural practices, complete with business plans, marketing strategies, branding and websites. A fantastic way to help students understand the business and financial aspects of practice to complement their design skills. Later in the day, our student Placement and Work Experience Champions hosted a student-led event promoting and discussing placement and work experience options for 1st and 2nd year students. This was a really well attended event which involved a panel discussion with students discussing their diverse experiences and sharing their top tips, followed by informal networking and further conversation over pizza where students could learn from each other as well as chatting to colleagues from the Employability Team and the Enterprise Team. There was also a photographer offering free professional headshots for students to use on their LinkedIn profiles. All in all a great event and I was struck by the maturity and professionalism of our students and their willingness to share their experiences and advice to help inspire others. Some key takeaways included: - The importance of being proactive and reaching out to potential employers or placement providers to ask for opportunities. The worst that can happen is that they say no! - The benefits of getting involved in extra curricular opportunities such as competitions and international exchange programmes - you never know where they could lead you. - Using placements and work experience to explore your career ideas and inform your future career planning - even if it's ruling out things you don't like. I’m thrilled 😁 to share that I’ve completed The Exeter Award 🌟 from the University of Exeter! This has been such an incredible journey of learning and growth. Here’s a bit of what I got up to: First, I completed 35 hours of work experience as a consultant at ExeConsulting and Green Consulting. It was a fantastic way to gain hands-on skills and real-world experience. I also attended some beneficial personal development workshops.📚 In the Personal Resilience sessions, I learned the importance of resilience, took a good look at my own levels, and practised ways to build this vital skill. Another workshop on presentation skills helped me refine and practice my presentation skills. The CV and application form workshop was super insightful. I learned what to include in a CV, different formats, and how to market my skills effectively. Plus, I strengthened my LinkedIn profile, built my network, explored LinkedIn learning tools, and improved my online communication. For some practical experience,📝  I completed a mock job application for Cypheron Futures. It gave me a better understanding of the application process and how to present myself effectively. I also watched a video on interview techniques, which covered everything from handling different types of interviews to confidently framing my answers. To top it off, I participated in a group mock interview. It was an excellent opportunity to practice and get some beneficial feedback. As I wrap up my undergraduate studies in architecture, I'm thrilled to finally unveil my portfolio! This collection represents not just projects, but a journey of exploration, experimentation, and a growing passion for shaping the built environment. Throughout my undergraduate years, I've delved into various design challenges. From conceptualizing community spaces that foster interaction to tackling the technical aspects of sustainable building practices, each project has pushed me to expand my skillset and refine my design thinking. Beyond the technical aspects, my portfolio showcases my creative vision. You'll see projects where I've explored the interplay of light and form, or experimented with materiality to create unique and functional spaces.
