Excellent to have The Sports Effect on board.

So, that’s 2023 wrapped! 🎉 Last year we continued to lead a number of initiatives in West Yorkshire, from Business Volunteering to Youth Engagement Activities. As well as our own projects, we’re also proud to support other socially-focused enterprises including charities, social enterprises, community businesses and similar projects. 🤝 We continued to support new and existing enterprises to reach their goals with expert guidance and/or coaching, and our latest annual report shows just how much we’ve achieved. We helped with the start-up of 45 new enterprises and gave on-going support to 93 existing ones. 🌱 As you can see, this also included support in securing £73,500 in grants that will make a massive difference to the enterprises involved and their community! Through this work 28 FTE jobs were created in the most disadvantaged areas of Keighley alone, and we helped grow 3 business networks to help support and grow local business initiatives. As we enter 2024 with our newly expanded team of Enterprise Coaches through the Business for Good programme*, we anticipate a significant increase in our support this year, with new resources and opportunities for socially-focused businesses in different areas of West Yorkshire🌳. Our decision to partner with Sported back in the early days of the consultancy stemmed from a shared belief in the #powerofsport and #physicalactivity to really bring about positive change in young people’s lives and strengthen communities across the UK. Why Sported? We chose to work with Sported because of their commitment to supporting community groups and creating inclusive opportunities for participation. Their vision aligns perfectly with our consultancy’s mission to drive meaningful, purpose-driven solutions. Our Work Our team at Nicky Affleck Consultancy Ltd engaged in a comprehensive evaluation of Sported’s Connected Communities model. This involved facilitating workshops and community groups across London to understand the programme's benefits and engagement levels. Through detailed research and development, we provided a full report with actionable recommendations for future initiatives. The Connected Communities model is vital in creating resilient, inclusive communities. It highlights the importance of local partnerships and stakeholder engagement, demonstrating that collaboration at the grassroots level can lead to substantial, positive changes. Our expertise in stakeholder engagement and workshop facilitation was crucial in uncovering these insights and providing strategic direction. Key Learnings One of the most significant learnings was the underestimated value of peer learning within community groups. This insight has prompted Sported to revamp their member engagement strategy, emphasizing peer learning and networking to maximize impact. Our regular, open, and honest communication with Sported ensured a shared understanding of needs and outcomes, leading to effective decision-making. Our Expertise This project showcased our consultancy's strength in research and development, stakeholder engagement, and workshop facilitation. We are proud of the thorough evaluations and clear, strategic insights we provided, which have already led to tangible results for Sported. We are grateful for the opportunity to support Sported and are really pleased about the change our collaboration has initiated. Sported has published its latest Pulse survey, gaining a deep insight into the 3,000 community groups we support across the country and the young people on whom they make a daily impact. The research once again underlines their critical importance in deploying sport and physical activity to actively transform their lives and address societal issues with locally-driven solutions. But it also highlights how cost of living rises are putting significant pressures on these clubs and organisations with a sector that is often excluded from traditional funding streams, relying instead on backing from charities like ourselves. And the insight underlines how squeezes in disposable income are threatening to freeze out young people from this difference-making source of help with evidence already of significant disengagement and reductions in participation, exacerbating the financial jeopardy in play within grassroots sport. I wanted to take a minute to re-post this from my friend and colleague Millie Downes. As we head into winter the pressures on us all, to feed ourselves and our families, are exacerbated by the costs of keeping our homes warm. Now more than ever we need to invest in an infrastructure that creates affordable food opportunities within our communities and I share this thought from the East of England Local Government Association, surfaced as part of their recent Roundtable on the Cost of Living, Fuel and Food Insecurity. If people cannot afford nutritious food, their physical and mental health worsens. Over 40 per cent of households in receipt of Universal Credit are food insecure and over 60 per cent of people who were referred to food banks in August last year had a disability or long-term health condition. Sustainable funding to support local foodbanks [and affordable food programme] is a significant challenge. Working with local communities to set up these incredible assets has been an absolute joy but the work doesn't stop when the ribbon is cut. We need to combine our efforts to integrate affordable food production, provision and insecurity into our broader, strategic plans Climate change, Waste, Housing, Economic Growth and Public health, seeing food as a common thread not an isolated topic. We've recently published our Annual Report, a review of our work from April 2022 to March 2023. The report provides a valuable overview of our work and what we have achieved during this period. Helping to deliver the Sport England #UnitingtheMovement strategy locally, our work focuses on tackling the inequalities that exist in opportunities to be more physically active. Highlights in this period include: ▶Established the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Group to better understand the needs of everyone in Lincolnshire and support the physical activity sector and other partners. ▶ Supported 40 grassroots clubs and organisations through Sport England's #TogetherFund to help people facing greatest inequalities ▶ Establishing the #WheelsForLife Bike Refurbishment and donation scheme. ▶ Distributing Opening School Facilities Funding to 17 Lincolnshire Schools, supporting communities to be active where need is greatest. ▶ The Let’sMoveLincolnshire.com website and activity finder continues to grow with new content being added and more sessions and clubs using the free service. ▶ We trained 37 Physical Activity Champions with OHID and a further 23 This Mum Moves ambassadors as part of our pre and post natal partnership working ▶ We continue to extend the reach of our stakeholder engagement, working closely with a wide range of stakeholders and organisations to collaborate, co-create and better connect for more positive outcomes for our communities. As Wimbledon kicks off today, we’re challenging the players to hit their fastest serves and support our pledge to donate up to 75,000 connections to bridge the digital divide for sports clubs. I believe that this local campaign can be a key enabler in delivering a fundamental shift in national cross-sector power dynamics & resource allocation. Great morning (& networking lunch) spent at the #KeepTheBeatAlive Asks to Actions Workshop, hosted at the wonderful Fountain in Lesmahagow. Exploring how our 3 big asks (recognise our value, be smarter about funding, and meaningfully engage with us) can be converted into actions for different stakeholders to carry forward through the 2nd half of the calendar year. Our volunteers, community organisations, charities & enterprises can play their part, more can join too as we help to #KeepTheBeatAlive, as we evolve we now also need clear actions for the general public. If we want to influence local, but especially national, policy shapers & decision makers on the value & impact of the third sector, we need shared leadership & everybody to play their part. I’d like to show some love to everybody at Electrify, especially Lauren Bennett, Peter Campbell & Lawrence Broadie who have been absolutely magnificent. Worth every penny of investment, & more, delivered above & beyond all expectations. Thank you for everything to these superstars, honestly. The Governments new sports strategy sets national participation targets of an additional 2.5 million adults and 1 million children active by 2030 A highly comprehensive plan which will see the government join forces with former sports stars, health professionals and fitness experts to increase physical activity by 2030. The impact on society is all to clear; but one thing missing in this plan for us is how companies who employ over 32.9 million people can support their staff to move more. 🤔 How do you strengthen businesses and communities in a digital world? This morning I attended a local event hosted by The Mayor of Dacorum, William Allen, and Community Action Dacorum. 💡 There were a wide range of local businesses and charities there to share ideas and explore how businesses can grow and support each other locally - I was keen to listen to the topics and views that are most pressing for local organisations. 🙏 A number of entrepreneurs, alternative thinkers and economic development specialists shared some perspectives on how businesses can engage and thrive, as well as highlighting some of the challenges that still need to be worked on. Thank you Adrian Hawkins OBE, James Doe Louise Towler Ed Mayo and Simon Aulton for sharing your expertise and answering the questions from the audience. Points that stood out for me were: 🎯 The launch of the Mayor's Future Fund to help build thriving and sustainable communities in Dacorum by supporting the disadvantaged. 🎯 The recent published consultation for the Dacorum Local Plan (2024-40) focused on how Dacorum is going to grow and use land for housing, businesses & the environment. 🎯 Tips on using digital tools to communicate locally and measuring the carbon footprint of your website 🎯 How people are motivated and getting the balance right between needs of others and themselves. 🎯 Ideas around re-inventing the high street and creating economic conditions which foster growth. 🎯 The power of market forces - in particular Local businesses choosing to "Buy Local". 💯 Small businesses are the heartbeat of your neighbourhood, the spine of the local economy, and the spirit of your town - when you buy local you are investing in your community. #localbusiness #localbusinesssupport #charityfundraising #charitysupport #community #communityengagement
