🏗️ Reimagining the Future of Student Accommodation and Beyond 🏡
Developers are recognising that student accommodation and hotels share many of the same needs, which is why they’re increasingly turning to us. With our proven expertise in high-quality furniture, fit-outs, and custom modular construction, we’re uniquely positioned to meet these demands while driving innovative, sustainable design forward.
But as we collaborate with developers, a question lingers: Why are so many still designing uninspired, box-like structures?
We have a unique opportunity to lead by example and rethink housing across Australia—whether it’s NDIS houses, residential projects, or student accommodations. Imagine embracing the principles of biophilic design, like the Danes, to create sustainable, enriching environments that truly enhance well-being.
I’m encouraged by the growing consensus around building upwards, but can we push further? Let’s move beyond the mundane, and design spaces that foster growth, creativity, and a deep connection to nature. Our kids—whether they’re university students or growing up in Sydney’s west—deserve better.
Cost concerns? They’re real, but modular construction in a factory setting makes innovative design more accessible than you might think. Let’s seize this moment to create something remarkable—housing that reflects our commitment to sustainability and well-being. 🌿✨

>> Certified Sustainability: The building features a green roof that supports biodiversity, helps in rainwater management, and improves air quality while regulating indoor temperatures (Lars Gitz Architects) (Kragh Berglund).
>> Energy Efficiency: About 90% of the building's ventilation system energy is recovered and reused, significantly reducing the overall energy consumption and enhancing heating efficiency.
>> Eco-Friendly Transportation: With 1,000 bike parking spaces and proximity to natural reserves, the project promotes less reliance on cars, encouraging cycling and outdoor activities.

The building's unique modular design, using trapezoid-shaped modules, creates a distinctive, organic form that harmoniously blends with the surrounding landscape.
This project exemplifies how architecture can go hand in hand with sustainability and community well-being, making it a landmark in modern living spaces.
Would you consider living in such a community? How important are the inclusion of green features in your choice of residence?

Exciting progress on the 'Moringa' building site! We're proud to be working alongside WTM Engineers GmbH on this groundbreaking development, led by Moringa GmbH (Landmarken AG). As Germany’s first Cradle-to-Cradle residential high-rise, this eco-friendly project in #HafenCity, #Hamburg, is setting new benchmarks for sustainable urban living.
The 'Moringa' complex, designed by kadawittfeldarchitektur, will feature 190 residential units, including subsidised housing, alongside co-working and co-living spaces. The buildings are arranged around a lush green courtyard, creating more green space—both horizontally and vertically—than is built over. The façade will act as a 'green lung', enhancing air quality, reducing heat, and contributing to biodiversity in the area.
Following the Cradle-to-Cradle philosophy, the project utilises recyclable and healthy materials, designed for easy dismantling and reuse, showcasing the future of circular construction. With completion set for 2025, 'Moringa' is poised to usher in a new era of sustainable living in HafenCity.

We are really delighted that we have received planning permission for ‘Reinventing Borde Hill’ project in West Sussex. The NLHF funded project will create wider access to Borde Hill’s beautiful landscape and rich heritage. The project will improve:
- the overall long-term sustainability of the site and preserve its heritage
- accessibility for local communities and people who do not have easy access to outdoor green spaces
-the opportunities for learning and wellbeing in this landscape, to create meaningful connections with nature
At its core, the project embraces low-carbon and regenerative approaches, supported by continuous stakeholder engagement. Key design elements include improved access and connectivity to the South Park site, a year-round Eco Lodge on the lake serving as a community and wellbeing hub, a dedicated space for outdoor play and learning, as well as community growing and educational programme at Sugworth Farm.
We are excited to collaborate with Borde Hill, Jay and her dedicated team to bring this vision to life!

In the Belgian municipality of Edegem, a brownfield site that once stored camera film has become a biodiverse, sustainable mixed-use residential and commercial neighborhood.
With thanks to Steven Evans, Chief Executive - Residential and Development, and Nicola Tagiston, Head of Sustainability from Urban Development Institute of New Zealand UDINZ member Fletcher Living for hosting yesterday lunchtime's "walkthrough" of LowCO.
We saw Fletcher Living’s innovative pilot home project and the 3 bed terrace-housing equivalent and got an explanation of the innovative products, systems and landscaping used in both.
Thanks too to the speakers Ged Campbell of member Watercare Services Limited and Philip Kingston of member Watersmart (supplier of Hydraloop amongst other things) who also contributed to the discussion.
LowCO reimagines how we build homes in New Zealand, to make them healthier, warmer, drier and more sustainable through technology solutions but also lots of small details (less corners in the design, soffits, argon filled glass windows that align with "puffer jacket" wooden insulation, reduced waste through offsite manufacturing and careful management of material etc etc) which together all add up to a great result (recently awarded 10 Homestar rating from NZGBC). Knock on effects too from examples "shown, not told" eg experience of the crossing design having persuaded Auckland transport to now accept lower carbon options on which they will shortly be releasing a practice note for the industry.
LowCO became a reality through a collaboration of Fletcher Building businesses and a partnership with Watercare Services Limited (and many others) to meet the overarching goal of building with seven times less carbon than a standard New Zealand built home.
For those not able to attend yesterday's tour that are interested in the learnings do keep a watch out for our upcoming coverage of this project online as part of our webinar series "Innovation in Housing: thinking that's outside the box!" On a related topic there's an upcoming workshop we're hoping to also run in conjunction with NZGBC.

🌱 How can a new-build project truly be sustainable and nature-inclusive? 🌞
In Hintham, Netherlands, they show how it’s done. On the former site of the primary school De Vlieger, two care complexes with 38 apartments now stand, seamlessly connecting with the surrounding nature. 💚
🔍 What makes this project so special?
🌿 Green and sustainable: Energy-efficient living is the norm here, with heat pumps, triple-glazed windows, and 110 solar panels on a 1500 m² Solar Sedum roof. 🌿
🐾 Focus on biodiversity: The design integrates bat boxes, flower meadows, and the preservation of an old lime tree to create a healthy living environment. 🐾
🌞 Innovative and efficient: Combining a green roof with solar panels enhances energy output and offers residents a stunning green view. 🌞
💡 The result?
A future-proof, nature-inclusive residential complex that reduces heat stress, stores water, and promotes biodiversity – perfect for both people and the planet! 🌍
