Yay, Richie! Your hard work, dedication, ambition, and talent are unmatched. I’m so happy you are being recognized for your investment and involvement in the community!
Now, this post may put me on the paparazzi’s radar…and they may become extra relentless once they learn I’m your sister, leaving me little to no choice but to entertain their need to get the dirt on you. Don’t worry! I’m already preparing for it. I’ll probably say something along the lines of-
“From the moment I met him, I knew he had something special.” “I saw his potential early on and knew he would go far.” “Of course he was going to be successful, our parents doted on him. My sister and I didn’t mind though. Oh, you didn’t even know Richie had two siblings? Neither did our parents.” “He’s always put 127% into his work. For example, that time he modeled for Abercrombie…”.*
As for questions like: “Does he always obey the speed limit?” “Has he ever used Sun In?” “Is it true Grover is his favorite Sesame Street character?” You can rest assured I’ll answer “No comment.”.
While I can’t say I’m surprised you made the list, if asked about my feelings on your inclusion, I will express I am a litttttttle disappointed you’ve not made a 30 Under 30. Clearly you didn’t consider how that would make your older sister feel. I guess you only gave 95% during that selection timeframe.
In all seriousness, I’m so proud of you! But I also want to take a moment to acknowledge the amazing support and partnership you have with Charissa. Together, you both make an unstoppable team, and I'm in awe of the way you complement each other's talents. Bravo to both of you for your incredible accomplishments! Your bestest, however, are the four kiddos. 💜

Very timely OpEd by the Crain's Chicago Business editorial board to highlight that we need new business leaders to follow the footsteps of highly civically minded business leaders like Jim Crown and Rocky Wirtz:
"They also embodied a tradition that sets Chicago’s business community apart from other major metros: This city expects its business elite to play a role in its civic life, getting big projects like Millennium Park off the ground, contributing to the upkeep of beloved institutions such as the renovation of the Museum of Science & Industry, and helping elected officials to take on giant, seemingly intractable challenges such as combating crime, improving education and creating economic opportunity in the neighborhoods as well as the Loop."
As I mentioned in yesterday's post here on LinkedIn, we need a new generation of business leaders who are civically engaged to build a better Chicago across all 77 neighborhoods. A sole focus on generating business growth and profit will not build a more equitable and inclusive region where the opportunities are as equally distributed as the talent already is.

Our Commission on Software-Defined Warfare is off & running! What a first day!
We debated & discussed what the focus of the commission should be. We spent a lot of time trying to identify the problem to be solved, which is easier said than done. We also discussed the name of the commission, with many proposing changes. The conversation was respectful, but there were disagreements, which is a good thing.
There were a few core issues:
- What is intellectual property, how is it protected, and how is it used?
- Should we focus on software, the technical stack that supports it, or both?
- Is there a difference in how the DoD should apply dual-use software (e.g. logistics management, budgeting, predictive maintenance, etc.) vs. that which is used solely for warfighting?
Much more to come!
A day full of meeting with likeminded people is always a good one!
I also spoke with Chris England today and we will be making some production improvements based on his great advice. We are always looking to improve our content and Chris had some awesome pointers to help us out!

CEO Team Wildfire. Exec Dir Wildfire Labs. Problem solver, FX Coord, expert witness, TV producer, author, keynote speaker, STEM presenter of the year. Techstars’23! Host: The Fire Break. If it's impossible, count me in.
There’s an exciting trend developing; people who don’t come from a “fire background” are being drawn to the fire space, bringing new perspectives, talents and experience to bear on the wildfire crisis. Seth Schalet is a great example.
Drawing on decades of business and philanthropy leadership experience, Seth turned the Santa Clara County FireSafe Council into the only such organization to pay its own way, with profitable operations and a full time staff. As he’s done many times with previous ventures, he’s used his keen business skillls and powerful collaborative abilities to turn SCCFC into a brilliantly effective and self sustaining model for other non-profits. Very few people understand the concept of “no margin, no mission” as well as does this dynamic CEO. And as I mention in the show, Seth Schalet is one of the best examples of what it means to be a mensch. (Look it up if you don’t know the term.)
Learn a few of his secrets to success here in his fascinating interview.
Spoiler, it begins with character, integrity, humility, curiosity, and drive.
