Today marks the final (working) day of #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek 😭 This week, we've covered lot's of content that we really hope you've found useful! Now, content and ideas are great! 🎉 But what if we can't use them because there are barriers in our way? 🚧 So, for our final post, let's talk about these barriers and what we can do to overcome them. We can break these down into a number of categories: 👉 Physical. You may have suffered previous injuries and worries about them happening again, or may be living with a long-term health condition / disability. 👉 Psychological. Think (punbelieveable) our expectations, self-esteem and image, how much praise we give ourselves. This could also cover our mental health. 👉 Financial. Stretched finances during the cost-of-living crisis are likely to be a barrier, but they don't have to be. 👉 Environmental. Factors such as changeable weather, access to suitable outdoor space or leisure facilities can determine what you can and can’t do. 👉 Time. Our lives can be so full on, so finding time for physical activity can be challenging. So, what can we do about these barriers? 🤔 It's important to remember that, in the same way barriers are individual, the solutions will be, too. Find what works for YOU rather than just copying something that has worked for someone else. Here are some key points to remember when trying to overcome barriers: 🎖 Set achievable goals and be kind to yourself - make sure you acknowledge your accomplishments. 😖 Remember that some days will be harder than others! 👩⚕️ Take professional advice where necessary. 💰 From public spaces to apps and the internet, there are loads of free options out there! 🕰 Find gaps in your schedule when you can incorporate some activity and protect it for that purpose. ⛈ Have a back-up plan if mother nature tries to rain on your parade. One solution that ticks all these barriers is to sign up to support The Nelson Trust with 1k your way in may! It's National Volunteer Week!! Celebrate with us as we shout out another pivotal member of our community: Q. What is your name?: A. Wanda Griffin Q. How long have you been involved with AFSP?: A. Two years Q. What is your volunteer role within AFSP?: A. I participate in local tabling events (Bergen County Stand Down, Jersey City Pride Festival, In Their Shoes, Ramsey Farmer’s Market, etc.). I also hold two roles for the Bergen County Out of the Darkness Walk committee member and company sponsor lead. Q. What brought you to AFSP?: A. I was introduced to the AFSP in 2019 by a colleague when I volunteered to serve as a panelist with my company. I attended my first AFSP event in 2022, Finding Hope: Guidance to Supporting Those At Risk, and became a volunteer shortly after that. I felt it was important to give back to an organization that has helped me as a family member/caregiver of a suicide survivor. Connecting with others who understood what I was going through, and getting resources and support was so critical for my personal mental health. What the AFSP has provided; was a game changer. Q. Why is your work with AFSP important to you?: A. I don’t want anyone to ever feel like they are alone. There are people who care; even those you don’t know. I’ve been fortunate enough to experience that firsthand through AFSP. There is power in numbers and the more of us that raise awareness; the more we can break the stigma. Suicide has been a part of my life for such a long time and I wouldn’t want that for future generations. A hug, listening, caring, showing empathy, acknowledgment, being mindful, kind, etc., those little things can make a huge difference to someone who is struggling. With the help of the AFSP, I’ve been able to become more aware of how important these small acts of kindness are.

As we navigate the highs and lows of life, loneliness can sometimes cast a shadow, leaving us feeling disconnected. But amidst this feeling of isolation lies a powerful remedy: community engagement. When we immerse ourselves in our communities, something profound happens. We become part of something bigger, with each act of service bringing us closer to one another. Whether it's lending a helping hand at a local shelter, tutoring a student in need, or cleaning up a local park, every gesture of kindness creates ripples of connection that reverberate far beyond us. Yet, this impact extends even deeper. Research shows that volunteering doesn't just strengthen social ties; it nurtures our mental well-being, increases self-worth, and shields against the pangs of loneliness. By giving back to the communities that nurture us, we not only sow seeds of positive change but also find a greater sense of fulfillment and belonging. So, let's seize the opportunity today. Let's roll up our sleeves, step into action, and together, let's combat loneliness by building stronger, more resilient communities. #Loneliness #MeaningfulConnections #CommunityEngagement

Chief Executive Officer | Advocate | Social Profit Leader| Fostering Innovation to Address Social Challenges
We hear a lot about stigma and our need to reduce it, but what is it and why is it a problem? Stigma reduction in mental health is essential for improving access to care, promoting well-being, fostering social inclusion, preventing mental health issues and reducing the emotional suffering that stigma can cause. It's a crucial step toward creating a more compassionate and supportive society for individuals with mental health challenges. One organization I'm thrilled to shine a spotlight on the work they are doing to educate and combat stigma, is the Stigma-Free Society (SFS). Coast Mental Health has been a partner and supporter of SFS since its inception and we have witnessed firsthand the transformative impact that SFS has had on individuals and communities. Co-founded by Dave Richardson and Andrea Paquette in 2016, SFS is dedicated to breaking down the barriers surrounding mental health. Their commitment to fostering understanding, compassion, and resilience is truly commendable. As we enter the back-to-school season, SFS's resources are an invaluable asset for educators and families alike. The Stigma-Free School Program equips school communities with accessible mental health tools and training to combat stigma, offering a diverse range of resources that can be easily implemented in the classroom or used at home. The program is designed to empower educators, school counsellors, parents/guardians, and students to advocate for mental health and reduce stigma. Coast Mental Health is proud to stand alongside the Stigma-Free Society and as strong supporters of mental health awareness and advocacy. Together, we're making strides towards a brighter, more inclusive future. #MentalHealthMatters #StigmaFreeSociety #CommunitySupport #BackToSchool 🔗 Learn more about SFS's initiatives:

Can you see your goals, but you can’t get to them? Is leadering not all you thought it would be? I will help you get over the hump and achieve the things you've envisioned, without shame or blame.
This is for my friends who do nonprofit work, and it's based on a call I got this week, and many other calls I've received for the last nearly 16 years as a foster/adoptive and now kinship parent. 1. Please ensure your volunteers are educated/trained at least as well as the people they're charged with supporting/evaluating. 2. Bias is a real thing, and we all have it, whether that be bias against or for people in certain socioeconomic groups, race, familial circumstances, weight, whatever. This family got a complaint filed because they had "clutter" in their home. Not unclean. Not unsafe. There was clutter. 3. Please interview your prospective volunteers to ensure they are actually interested in the mission of your organization and not on a power trip or out to save the world by making everyone like themselves. There are ways to conduct those interviews that are not straight-up asking, "Hey! Are you on a power trip?" Rarely do any of the systems work the way they're supposed to for us and our kids. That's legal, CPS, mental health, education, etc. Please do not make it harder.

Social Impact Communications Entrepreneur Striving To Heal Our Planet And Our People With Words And Action
Now, be honest, would seeing this billboard reach out to you and help you feel seen and worthy? This is the first billboard I raised in July 2020. I barely got the funds for it and it was during the lockdown timeframe. It saved lives, helped people leave bad relationships, and helped folks see that yes, they are so very special for just being them. It's time now to evolve the campaign and find folks who would like to sponsor a board and have their name on the board as someone who is supporting and holding individuals as they strive to lean into their ENOUGHNESS. I have started a "Where's Waldo" type of campaign where the goal will be to get these billboards up all over the United States to promote mental wellness and togetherness as a ONE when it comes time to feeling worthy. You can say that the campaign is similar to the 20 year old, Pass It On campaign where their goal is to simply provide a foundation for a better life with positive messages. We can get the YOU ARE ENOUGH message out to the world on a bigger stage and I look forward to working with individuals and companies to get these boards up all over the world. The timing could not be more perfect and as I keep stating, now, more than ever, is the time to UNITE2HEAL.
