“Amit, what are you afraid of? What’s holding you back from being vulnerable?” My manager Alan said this a decade ago, but it has stuck with me. It was the summer of 2014. I felt excited about my upcoming secondment to Australia. My project was to build the strategy of an important revenue line. The project allowed access to the local leadership team. The GM of Australia, Jeff, was a great people person and a senior leader in Asia Pacific. He ran a big P&L and sat on the regional Executive Committee. His voice carried weight for regional promotions and role transitions. At that time, I was struggling to influence people from other cultures. That was limiting my effectiveness at work. I wanted to learn how Jeff influenced an international team and his regional peers. But I felt uncomfortable being vulnerable with him. I felt that would make him think less of me and hurt my future chances of growth (i.e. promotion). I was afraid of making a bad impression. I spoke to Alan about how I felt. He spotted the discomfort and fear in me. He called me out, and taught me a valuable lesson - "that being vulnerable was a path to grow". Thanks to Alan, I opened up to Jeff and explored my struggles. I found solutions and tips that have helped me since. I built a strong relationship. Being vulnerable can stem from a fear of rejection, judgment or loss of control. But these fears are often exaggerated in our heads. Exactly a year ago today, I took a massive step. Having left an organisation that I had spread my wings in, seen the world with, and called home for nearly thirteen years, I was buoyed by the energy and client feedback from running my own show for a few months. I made a critical life choice, and stepped forwards into a another global organisation. We can DO more than we've ever anticipated by BEing #MoreThan we've ever appreciated - a phrase many of you will have heard me deliver, as it is my core belief, it drives me to do what I do. Ironically, a year ago today, this now presented itself as my biggest fear. Was the step I was about to take, joining Korn Ferry, an organisation I have revered throughout my career, going to compliment or compromise my core belief? Would I be expected to confirm, to tow the line, to fit in? Would I be free to be me? I remember sitting down and talking my concerns through with some of Korn Ferry's most senior leaders, before signing on the dotted line. I needed to know from them, that this was a place I could thrive, have the greatest impact I've ever had, but most importantly, I needed to see it in their eyes. At that moment, I knew. The calmness in their tone and lack of reactivity to my concerns was all I needed, but what came next was a game changer. "We're bringing you in not because of what you know or what you can do, but because of who you are. We want you to bring your whole self, challenge us, provoke us, and inspire us to strive to be better again and again." As Maya Angelou said "people will forget what you say, they'll forget what you do, but they'll never forget how you make them feel." I haven't forgotten that moment, I relive it whenever I have a moment of doubt, it spurs me to be bold and lean in. It inspires me with the freedom and support to make the choices that enable me to show up as my best, whenever and wherever that may be. This picture was taken in Geneva, sitting by the lake at 6:15am, prepping for a client meeting, with a CEO. I didn't prep in a hotel room, I wasn't sat at a desk, I found my space and I did my thing. It was a good meeting. A really good one. I completed 2 years at Russell Reynolds Associates on Nov 1. As I reflected upon the 2 years gone by, my mind took me through each of the organizations I have worked at and the following opened up or crystallised for me: 1. Discomfort. I was shaped more by the organizations where I struggled than the ones where it was smooth sailing. Difficult cultures shaped me and helped me build new skills. I mostly realised this later; maybe even a year after I moved on. 2. Lattice vs ladder. Taking on roles I had never done before with greater scale/complexity - shaped me. My career path was as much horizontal as it was vertical. Sideways moves gave me breadth. Vertical moves gave me depth. 3. It's all about relationships. Whether you're new in a role or old. Relationships are influence. Relationships are your support system. Relationships are your source of information. 4. Ownership. From the day you join, everything belongs to you. The problems, the opportunities. They're all yours. You cannot blame the system or the structure or the culture. This is not a problem - this is the context. And you can't blame the context. Learn to succeed in it. Learn to influence it. Lead to change it. 5. Grace. Join with grace. Operate with grace. Depart with grace. #Leadership

After a long break from writing, I am finally back to finishing my series on the Female Leadership Academy I joined before the summer. On session 3, we had Lene Hylling Axelsson from Novo Nordisk sharing about the ups and downs of her international experience within one organization. Her biggest advice? If you have an opportunity to be an executive assistant, take advantage of it. Her talk and the further exercise helped me to reflect and see the patterns in my own career as well. I wanted to stop feeling guilty about the choices I've made as everyone's career journey is unique. In this 2 months of my Presidency period I had couple of success and lots of failure too. But it gives me huge learning lesson and satisfaction that I tried strategically. It brought my maturity to next level in a very short period. ✅ Successfully restructured my organization after a huge downfall. ✅ Activated 8 departments in well-structured shape. ✅ Made collaboration and organized one of the Nation's biggest Career Carnival. ✅ Sorted out lots of conflicts between internal and external stakeholders; ensured a healthy work culture inside. ⛔ Failed in a big TedX collaboration due to National political instability. ⛔ Failed to organize a short recruitment due to intersession. ⛔ Slipped a totally new innovative activity collaboration with a reputed company. But every steps brought up a new version of my brain. Which made me more confident than 2 months ago.
