Reflecting on the wisdom of the visionary playwright Lorraine Hansberry, who urged us to "never be afraid to sit a while and think," we find a call to action to reevaluate and reshape our roles within the organizational culture and the broader culture. These cultures are interdependent, microcosms nested within each other, each influencing and shaping the other. Our workplaces are not isolated islands, but a reflection of the society we live in. The dynamics, values, and behaviors of our professional lives are a mirror of the broader cultural context. If we aspire to create a more inclusive and equitable society, our organizations must become the starting points and catalysts for this change. As we embark on this journey of reflection and transformation, we must ask ourselves: how can we create an organizational culture that fosters collaboration, respects diversity, and ensures every voice is heard? How can we effect change in the broader culture by starting with our own workplace microcosm? The answers to these questions have the power to inspire significant cultural shifts, both within our organizations and society at large. Together, we can re-envision and rewrite the script of our professional lives. We can create workplaces that don't merely reflect society's values but help shape them. By doing so, we can inspire change, not just within the confines of our organizations, but also in the broader cultural landscape. Let's not be afraid to sit, think, and question. Let's be the architects of a more inclusive, diverse, and equitable workplace culture, and in turn, contribute to a broader culture that respects these same values. #LorraineHansberry #SitAndThink #CulturalMicrocosms #WorkplaceCulture #Diversity #Inclusion #Equity #Collaboration #VoiceForAll #InspireChange #CultureArchitects #ReflectAndReshape #RethinkWorkplace

In honour of Diversity & Inclusion Month, Waseem Ali, CEO of Rockborne, spoke with Business Leader about the practical steps businesses can take to improve their DEI practices. One of which is simply to seize every opportunity to speak to one another. Waseem says: "All too often businesses operate in silos – facing the same issues but being unwilling to show vulnerabilities to one another." "...the business community has gained so much collective knowledge over time, based on trial and error, so it’s worth talking to other business leaders in similar situations or those who are doing well, to discuss their approach." In conversation with Meredith Sumpter and Council for Inclusive Capitalism, Jocelyn shares the importance of having cognitive diversity in the boardroom: "If you look at what we’ve all been through in this world over the last three years, it hasn’t been easy. And you wouldn’t want the same demographic shaping policies and decisions around such hard topics. Groupthink can be the riskiest thing, not just for innovation, but also for business as a whole." Reflecting on the challenges of doing DEI-related work and how vital it remains to workplace happiness, retention, innovation, productivity, everything really, I appreciate this recent piece in the NY Times. A few excerpts that really resonated with me: “Many organizations working on D.E.I. goals are getting stuck at the diversity stage — recruiting difference without managing it effectively.” “Inclusion…creates the conditions in which everyone can thrive and where our differences as varied, multidimensional people are not only tolerated but also valued.” “A willingness to pursue the benefits of D.E.I. — the full participation and fair treatment of all team members — renders organizational wholes greater than the sum of their parts.” “Organizations that get inclusion right at scale seem to be smarter, more innovative and more stable. One explanation is that they can see their competitive landscape — threats, risks, opportunities — more clearly and have greater access to the full knowledge base of their people.” DEI colleagues: What are the biggest challenges you're encountering right now? https://lnkd.in/dgZYnCj5
