Whether it’s Mickey Mouse t-shirts, Star Wars Lego sets or plush dolls based on the latest Pixar hit – licensed merchandise is a billion-dollar business and Disney is the undisputed leader. Last year, Disney reported $5.3 billion in revenue from “Consumer Products”, i.e. from licensing its IP to various manufacturers, game developers, retailers etc. and from selling its own branded merchandise. And while that amounts to no more than six percent of the company’s total revenue, the segment accounted for 23 percent of its operating income in 2022, thanks to an impressive operating margin of 53 percent. A well thought and crafted out campaign which personally I think is really cool! This reminded me of one of my module I did last term (Integrated Marketing Communications) and how a carefully thought out brand/marketing campaign can really make a difference ✨

Nostalgia brands inspire connection renewal with consumers. During recessions and depressions, people choose wisely where to spend money, often opting for familiar brands. A trusted brand ensures quality, service, and value. For example, Star Wars, launched in 1977, has regained trust with Disney's acquisition. Disney+ now thrives because of the Star Wars franchise, with viewers retaining subscriptions to access that content. Disney also acquired Marvel to strengthen its presence in the boys' demographic. By acquiring these franchises, Disney reached into demographic tribes and broadened its audience, even attracting those who might not have subscribed to Disney+ otherwise. A clip from this video featuring Lanny Smoot's work at Disney Imagineering has gone viral recently. While the clip is fascinating, it's just a small glimpse of the whole story. I highly recommend watching the entire video to fully appreciate his innovative journey and how it connects to creating amazing customer experiences. Smoot's work at Disney, like the HoloTile floor, shows us how important it is to think like our customers. This way of thinking helps us create great experiences for them. Smoot did this by really understanding what people visiting theme parks want and then making something special that adds to their fun. This is just like what we should do in customer service. We need to think about what our customers really need and want. Then, we can come up with new and creative ways to help them. When we try out these new ideas and see how customers like them, we make sure that we're not just using new technology, but also making our customers happy. So, let's use this way of thinking in our work.  . I’m not exaggerating - they have found a way to make money at every possible touch point within their parks. . A perfect example of this are the PINS that Disney sells within their parks. . Disney sells 10s of thousands of collectible pins that can be bought and traded and some hold significant value. . However, the backs that HOLD these pins in place are notoriously cheap - they’re going to break. . So what does Disney do? .
