🌱 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 (𝐄𝐖𝐀) 2023 𝐏𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 Last week, I had the privilege of attending the EWA program's pitch day in Norrsken Barcelona, a collaborative effort by EIT Food, Naked Innovations, IRTA, and more. The diversity in projects, both in ambitions and scope, left a lasting impression on me – a much-needed reflection of the industry's dynamic landscape. 🌐 Key Discussions: A Glimpse into the Future of Food Innovation 🚮 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 Upcycling food waste faces substantial regulatory and quality barriers. Projects like AbonoKm0 focus on converting non-replicable waste into compost, while Madari zumos takes an industrial approach by addressing waste from juice production. 💊 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 Three projects with different approaches to health: focusing on a key moment with MARIARMONIA and maternity; looking at a key ingredient and working on an alternative with Lākō and using big data for consumer’s education during their shopping with GUNDO. 🔬 𝐑&𝐃 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 ProPlantae and Protiberia are pioneering new ways to produce aligned with a sustainable vision. Proplantae focuses on alternatives to pesticides, while Protiberia places its bet on insect-based proteins within a circular model. 👩🌾 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 My three favourite projects stand out not for super tech or astronomical ROI, but for the tangible impact they create. Corbe setas de bodega transforms abandoned wine caves into mushroom cultivation rooms, Ca Climent revitalises abandoned land using forgotten crops at the intersection of tradition and modernity, and La Albarda represents a small holistic management project in Teruel. The EWA 2023 Pitch Day featured 10 projects, each presenting a unique vision for the future. From local to global initiatives, and small-scale to large-scale endeavors, it was the perfect blend needed to drive regeneration forward. ☁️ 🌍 🥗 Food+Climate Tech is growing! Following last week’s release of our yearly report on the state of the European FoodTech ecosystem (download it here), I’d like to focus on another key point: the role of FoodTech in fighting climate change. 1️⃣ What is Food+Climate Tech? - AgTech startups: all sub-categories are directly or indirectly related to fighting or mitigating (living with) climate change: farm management solutions, agbiotech, indoor farming… - Alternative proteins and functional ingredients, notably those that use less natural resources. - Supply Chain startups which are creating packaging innovations to replace single-use plastic packaging and those fighting food waste. 2️⃣ How big is Food+Climate Tech in Europe? Europe is often considered a leading region for investments in Climate Tech, so it seemed interesting to examine in detail the intersection of Food Tech and Climate Tech. 📈 As you can see on the graph, investments have declined in the past couple of years, but… they actually increased in Food+Climate Tech. Climate-related funding now accounts for more than 50% of the whole FoodTech funding, up from 10% 8 years ago. 🧑🌾 If we look in depth, this is mostly due to an increase in AgTech funding (which is itself linked to increased investments in bioinputs and in carbon credit). #OndaFrugal - Season 3-Episode 4: #Frugalinnovation and #Socialimpact This episode focuses on the potential social impact of frugal innovation projects and on the relevance of integrating social impact measurement and management practices in the design and implementation of these projects. It does it featuring the example of MittiCool, an Indian venture that produces terracotta clay refrigerators, a frugal innovation that runs without electricity, helping reduce its costs to a third. MittiCool expects to have a positive impact by: 👉🏽Recovering the Indian ceramic industry tradition and creating new jobs, notably for women 👉🏽Reaching out to a large part of the population that cannot access electricity and/or electric devices 👉🏽Preserving people’s health by providing affordable solutions to keep food in good conditions 👉🏽Reducing electronic waste and the use of substances with negative effect on the environment. ✅ In this episode, social impact is defined as the long-term changes experienced by a group of people or communities as result of a concrete innovation project, policy or program. This impact may be: - Direct or indirect - Positive or negative - Tangible or not ✅ This episode also highlights why we need to measure the impact of frugal innovation projects and how we can do it. Although impact starts with intention, we cannot take for granted that all innovation projects will meet their expected results and deliver a positive impact for the people. In fact, most of the sustainability evaluations of frugal innovation projects focus on results, taking often for granted their impact, by assuming the positive effects on the target groups, and neglecting possible negative impacts on people. “For instance, if a frugal solution makes available clean water to a given population, we may measure results in terms of the population number using this solution, while we may measure impact in terms of public health cost reductions associated with a lower percentage of cases of water-borne diseases happening within the same population using this solution in the next 5 years. There are many methodologies to measure and manage impact in line with the needs of different projects and organizations. The IMP and ROI methods are highlighted together with the use of standards frameworks such as the SDG impact standards. Most of these methods apply common criteria to measure impact, including (but not limited to): 👉🏽Interest groups analysis 👉🏽Before-after approach 👉🏽Quality and quantity Indicator frameworks, etc. Concluding, we need to improve the management system of frugal innovation projects, by embracing impact measurement practices and evidence at the short, mid and long run, making use of comparative analysis and thresholds to avoid or reduce intuitive impact attributions and their associated risks.
