🌟 Empowering Adolescents Through Peer Engagement! 🌟 In the A360 project, one of our most effective strategies for addressing unmet family planning needs among adolescents and young people has been leveraging the Local Adolescents Forum. By empowering these young advocates, we create a ripple effect where adolescents become champions for their peers, leading to greater adoption of family planning services. Through initiatives like Binti Shupavu and with the support of Population Services Kenya, we are not only meeting health needs but also fostering a culture of informed choices and empowerment among the youth. This peer-to-peer approach has proven instrumental in driving meaningful engagement and expanding access to essential reproductive health services. At A360 we recognize that parental/guardian support plays a crucial role in ensuring #girls have access to and continue using contraceptives, particularly for unmarried adolescents. This support can be the key to helping these girls make informed decisions about their #sexual and #reproductivehealth. That’s why, through our interventions, we actively involve parents/guardians in project activities to create a more supportive environment for adolescent girls. In Kilifi County, Kenya, we spoke with the mother of one of the girls in our program. She shared her thoughts on how being part of Binti Shupavu has impacted her daughter's life and the important role parents play in this journey. In this powerful piece, Noel Tonka CISM, ACA, ACCA. reflects on his personal experiences as a 30-year-old man in #Nigeria and shares insights from a recent learning visit to #Kenya. The blog calls attention to the societal norms that have sidelined boys and men in health programming, highlighting the need for targeted interventions to address their specific needs. The words of an elderly man during a graduation ceremony deeply resonate: “We must target the boy child as well. A lot of health issues will be resolved if we target the boy child.” This thought-provoking piece challenges us to rethink the way we engage men and boys in health initiatives. On October 11, 2024, the Society for Family Health Nigeria —A360 Nigeria MAYE Youth Network, in partnership with the Kano Youth Champions Development Initiative, commemorated the International Day of the Girl Child 2024 through a school-based campaign that reached 150 girls at Tudun Bojuwa Girls Secondary School in the Fagge Community of Kano State. This event aimed to raise awareness about the challenges faced by girls and to empower them with knowledge on goal setting and achieving those goals. The initiative aligns with the A360 project’s objectives of supporting girls’ education, health, well-being, and holistic development, empowering girls to become confident, self-reliant women who drive positive change in their communities and society. Last week, Society for Family Health Nigeria-A360 Nigeria collaborated with the Nasarawa State Ministry of Health to commemorate International Adolescent Health Week with the theme “thriving not just surviving”. The week featured various sensitization programs across four schools, along with social media campaigns and media dialogues. This effort reached over 400 adolescents, equipping them with essential information on mental health and sexual and reproductive health. This contributes significantly to improving adolescent health and development, empowering young individuals to make informed decisions and cultivate a healthier future for themselves and their communities.
