📢 Before walking the walk, we need to talk the talk! The implementation of the #Fitfor55 package was under the spotlight during our session “2030: ImplementAction!”, moderated by our very own Pauline Lucas. European Heat Pump Association’s Paul Kenny, Danfoss' Sasa Rihtarsic, Christian Hjelm Dybro and Veolia's Tomasz Surma have laid the foundations for successful implementation. Planning, political stability and financing are the three cornerstones that will enable #efficient #districtheating and #cooling solutions to be deployed at full scale. #Climatechange also means more recurring heat waves 🥵. The next session explored the benefits of district cooling solutions to "Keep us cool", while minimising climate impact and optimising resource efficiency and circularity. The afternoon was full of fascinating exchanges and food for thought. The #EHPSummit 2024 has begun! 🎉 We kicked off with an inspiring keynote from Polish Deputy Minister of Climate, Krzysztof (Chris) Bolesta, who outlined Poland's bold plan to cover all heat needs with #districtheating and low-emission solutions by 2040. With coal being phased out from urban heating by 2030, the stakes are high! As recalled by Euroheat & Power's President Janne Kerttula, accelerating #Europe's heating and cooling transition is a no-brainer whether we're aiming for affordable #energy #prices, energy #sovereignty or #climateaction. 📰 We've got some answers from the Commissioner-designate hearings, and they made one thing clear: there is a mandate to make heating and cooling clean, affordable, and competitive! 👂 Here's what we heard about heat: ❇ Dan Jørgensen, Commissioner-designate for Energy and Housing has committed to the implementation of the decarbonisation goals of the fit for 55 package, enhancing administrative and financial support, through a strategic approach to heating and cooling decarbonisation. ❇ Wopke Hoekstra, Commissioner-designate for Climate Action and Clean Growth, emphasised the urgent need to phase out fossil fuel subsidies and create a level playing field for clean energy solutions. ❇Teresa Ribera, Vice-President-designate for a Clean, Just, and Competitive Transition, pledged to drive a circular, fossil-free industrial economy forward. #Europe already counts with several homegrown solutions enabling these ambitious goals, such as #districtheating and #cooling. The 10th #JustTransitionPlatform Conference has come to an end, and this year's edition was a clear testimony that is great time for great change! 🍀   The collection of practical examples showcased during the conference demonstrated that the just transition is possible and in large part due to the creativity, efforts, and investments of key players in coal-to-carbon-intensive regions. 🙌   While the transition comes with challenges, the opportunities are huge to develop local, sustainable and homegrown solutions as this #DHC project in #Herleen proved!   The Dutch city has put in place one of the first so-called 5th generation DHC grids, an integrated heating and cooling system that uses a multitude of energy sources, technologies and digital tools to provide a flexible supply specifically designed for the city’s needs 🤸♂️ . Currently tapping into mine water from a former coal mine to harvest #geothermal heating, they are reducing 65% of #CO2 emissions for heating and cooling of connected properties in the region. 👏 The benefits of this project are not only #environmental but also #social, as former miners contribute their expertise to make it successful.🤩 We have a shared responsibility to support regions in this transition for it to be effective, and promote initiatives such as the "Multi-Level Dialogue on Just Transition" to take action!
