Cement is the backbone of our concrete jungle – holding up bridges, dams, and our homes. However, its production is a major contributor to global warming, accounting for 7-8% of CO2 emissions globally. To tackle this, companies worldwide, including ours, are actively exploring eco-friendly alternatives. One such innovation is LC3, or Limestone Calcined Clay Cement. Incorporating calcined clay into the mix significantly reduces the reliance on traditional raw materials. Another promising alternative is the use of slag – a byproduct from steel production – which otherwise ends up in landfills. Further initiatives, such as reducing clinker consumption and ongoing research in green modules, show a strong industry-wide commitment to sustainability. Cement consumption is not expected to decrease anytime soon. But what we can do is innovate, evolve and identify ways to become more sustainable. Bluescope Steel at Port Kembla, NSW, Australia has recently completed an installation of Sicut Railway Sleepers composite bearers on a turnout replacing degraded timber. The installation team commented that it “…handled just like timber and the installation was simple, quick and easy…” The use of composite bearers, unlike the carbon intensive and very expensive concrete option, provided BlueScope Steel with a circular economy solution when searching for a reliable, long term and economical replacement for the traditionally used but ever diminishing supply of timber. These composite bearers are made from waste plastic and are fully recyclable at the end of their life, making them truly sustainable and a great example of what the circular economy can achieve. Lafarge Canada Inc. announces the completion of the initial phase of its pilot project at the St. Constant Plant in Eastern Canada using Holcim’s ECOCycle technology. ECOCycle paves the way for recycling construction and demolition materials into new products for future construction. Across Lafarge Canada we’re evaluating any opportunity to decarbonize our operations and circularity is part of this effort. This pilot is critical to demonstrate that we can effectively repurpose concrete waste which goes a long way to conserve our naturally occurring resources and loops in construction sustainability. The initiative shows a good direction in the efforts for zero net carbon by 2050. According to the “2019 Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction” published by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the construction sector accounts for nearly 40% of global energy-related greenhouse gas emissions Oman has focused mainly on switching to Green Hydrogen as a source of energy to reduce the carbon emissions of the country. However, there is a direction to switch the construction sector into a green housing ecosystem with the use of more sustainable building materials and building self-energy generating houses Canada's planning to have green procurement policies related to the standards and codes would force the industry to join the initiative. In 2018, the construction sector contributed 9.4% of New Zealand's total domestic emissions. The government have played a big role in introducing the net zero carbon plan in 2022. We need all to unite from different sectors and contribute to the global 2050 Net Zero Carbon goals. #CO28 has been illustrating massive efforts globally to reach that goal and create a better future.
The Cement and Concrete Breakthrough Initiative has been launched at CO28 in Dubai, supported by the GCCA – Global Cement and Concrete Association.
