A recent study recorded that there are 33 species of snakes spotted in the city of Bengaluru, many of which are harmless. 🐍 It is important to understand our ecology better and the species living in that ecology, this helps in replacing the inherent feelings of perceived fear against the actual danger posed, giving space for tolerance, the first step towards co-existence. At a policy level, accounting for contiguous patches or 'wildlife buffers' for unrestricted movement of urban wildlife, mindful expansion, better garbage disposal system, etc. can aid the management and co-existence of snakes in urban areas. 🏡 Note - Medically significant snakes are the ones that have been known to cause human mortality or morbidity if there’s an unfortunate interaction.
