After months of hard work and building on the back of the #AFSF in Kigali, a group of like-minded organizations in #OGS and #Agriculture came together to respond the challenge of inter-ministerial coordination & thematic siloing. Along with 7 energy-agric coauthoring institutions "Energy Saving Trust, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, SNV, AGRA, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), Wageningen University & Research, and International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) & SNV", at GOGLA we published the new research paper "Beyond Silos: Powering Food Systems with Off-Grid Solar": https://lnkd.in/dWnc3vrN 🤝 The document explores an existing gradual approach for ministries of energy/agriculture (or respective departments at #MDBs/donors) to deliver against the nexus energy-agric. 🔦 This paper galvanizes the common approach by a number of energy-agric. organizations willing to break siloes and cross-polinate the energy-agric space - #AgricEnergyCoalition. 📈 4 tiers of nexus have been identified: 1. Stand-alone, with ministries/departments doing things independently; 2. Collaborating, with ministries/departments convening each other and sharing; 3. Co-creating, where they jointly work together (joint KPIs, joint programing, cohesive policies; and 4. We must make 𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞, technologically advanced, and profitable for young people. We must create policies that encourage local food production, protect our markets, and reward innovation in agribusiness. Food production is a critical sector where 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚’𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲. The continent has 60% of the world’s arable land, yet it remains a net importer of food, because what is farmed is mostly cash crops for export while the staple crops of our diet as Africans, comes from outside the continent. Investing in agricultural skills for Africa’s youth is not just about economic empowerment; it is about restoring dignity. It is about making sure that no young African has to risk their life crossing the Mediterranean, it is about ensuring that no child goes to bed hungry when their country has the means to produce abundance. It is about denying those that fund conflict and war of labour in the form of soldiers. It is about 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 𝐚 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞, not just for itself, but for the world.
