The Plus One Tree Initiative is actively engaged in the restoration of the Lake Baringo Basin, a crucial ecosystem in Kenya. This initiative focuses on combating #LandDegradation and promoting sustainable land management practices to preserve the area's biodiversity and ecosystem services. Key activities include: 1. Reforestation Efforts The initiative plants native tree species, such as Vachelia xanthophloea and grass species, which are well-adapted to the local environment. These efforts help stabilize soil, improve water retention, and create habitats for wildlife. 2. Community Engagement and Education By working closely with local communities, the initiative raises awareness about the importance of sustainable land practices. Training sessions and workshops empower community members with knowledge on soil conservation, agroforestry, and the benefits of maintaining healthy ecosystems. 3. Seedball Distribution To enhance reforestation efforts, the initiative distributes seedballs to community members, encouraging them to participate in planting and caring for new trees. 4. Monitoring and Evaluation The initiative employs monitoring and evaluation techniques to track the progress of restoration efforts and assess their impact on the local environment and community. The need for #stakeholders to support such activities is critical for achieving land degradation neutrality in the Lake Baringo #Basin. Stakeholders, including #government agencies, #NGOs, private sector partners, and international organizations, can provide: - Financial Support: #Funding is essential to scale up reforestation and conservation efforts, ensuring that more land can be restored and maintained. - Technical Assistance: Sharing #expertise in sustainable land management practices can enhance the effectiveness of restoration activities and introduce innovative solutions to existing challenges. - Policy Support: Creating and #enforcing policies that promote land degradation neutrality can strengthen efforts to protect and restore #ecosystems. -Collaborative Partnerships: Building partnerships between different stakeholders can facilitate resource sharing, knowledge exchange, and coordinated action, leading to more impactful outcomes. Supporting initiatives like the Plus One Tree Initiative, stakeholders can play a vital role in restoring the Lake Baringo Basin and contributing to the broader goal of achieving land degradation neutrality. Yesterday 25th day of October Plus One Tree Initiative attended the recent skills competition day at Nyeri National Polytechnic, represented by Edith Karwitha and Bennittes Kipyegon. Our team led an inspiring tree-planting activity symbolizing our dedication to fostering environmental stewardship among young people. This event not only provided practical skills to students but also underscored the importance of #conservation and #sustainable land management. As the trees were planted, Edith and Bennittes engaged attendees in discussions about climate action, emphasizing how tree planting contributes to carbon sequestration and combats land degradation. The initiative hopes this activity will instill a lifelong commitment to environmental care in the participants. Later , we visited a tree nursery that is being run under the leadership of Edith Karwitha and we were inspired to see a good job being done to support restoration efforts within the school compound and the communities living around. We cherish our partnership with Nyeri National Polytechnic and looking forward to engaging more partners now and in the future in our efforts to achieve land degradation neutrality. #LDNTargets Amos Aengwo Bennittes KipyegonEdith Karwitha Sharon Chepkoech Samson Mbugua Lena Moral Waldmeier GEO LDN Ingrid Teich COP16RiyadhUN Convention to Combat Desertification

On this International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, we highlight the vital link between land and livelihoods. Evidence shows that the poorest people often live on the most unfavorable lands. Restoring degraded lands creates economic opportunities for vulnerable communities and strengthens social systems. Addressing land degradation and social inequalities is crucial to ending poverty, which still affects 670 million people globally. Today October 10th, 2024, Plus One Tree Initiative led by Edith Karwitha partnered with The Nyeri National Polytechnic to celebrate Mazingira Day by planting 500 indigenous and fruit trees within the school compound. This action supports several key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 2: Zero Hunger Planting fruit trees helps promote food security by providing fresh, nutritious food for students and the local community. As these trees grow, they will offer a sustainable source of fruits, improving diets and reducing hunger. SDG 13: Climate Action Trees absorb carbon dioxide, helping to reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere;planting trees, we are taking action to combat climate change, protect the environment, and create a healthier planet for future generations. SDG 15: Life on Land Indigenous trees play a crucial role in restoring and preserving biodiversity. They provide habitats for wildlife, protect soil from erosion, and improve overall ecosystem health. This initiative helps maintain healthy forests and natural landscapes. SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals Collaboration between Plus One Tree Initiative and The Nyeri National Polytechnic demonstrates the power of partnerships in achieving these goals; working together can make a larger impact, share knowledge, and mobilize more resources to protect the environment. Through this tree-planting effort, we are contributing to a greener, healthier future while supporting food security, climate action, biodiversity, and strong partnerships.
