Cities face growing complexity, threats and challenges, from wildfires to political upheaval. More than a decade ago, Jo da Silva DBE, Global Sustainable Development Director at Arup, led a team to uncover how climate change would impact Asian cities and the proactive steps they could take to be more prepared. The project laid the foundation for the groundbreaking #CityResilienceFramework, now updated in 2024 to better enable cities to respond, plan and adapt to major shocks and underlying stresses. In the latest episode of the Urban Exchange Podcast, Jo shares her story and the City Resilience Framework's journey from its implementation in more than a hundred cities across the world to its evolution today. 🗣️🎙️https://lnkd.in/dnx_MTAi #UrbanExchange Arup | Lauren Sorkin | Paul Wilson | SmartCitiesWorld | The World Bank | City Resilience Program | The Rockefeller Foundation

We’re helping transform Europe’s largest nuclear site into a clean and safe environment for future generations. In partnership with Morgan Sindall Construction, our multidisciplinary team is upgrading the electrical distribution network on the 260-hectare Sellafield Ltd decommissioning site as part of a long-term alliance. Our work includes enhancing the electrical network by providing new substations, new connections, seven kilometres of cabling structures and increased power generation. This enhanced power infrastructure ensures Sellafield’s resilience throughout its ongoing decommissioning journey. Learn more about this project: https://lnkd.in/d5v_7CkR

Kate Jarritt, our Director and UK, India, Middle East, and Africa Lead of Strategy Consulting, was delighted to speak with Sir John Armitt on Tuesday at our 80 Charlotte Street auditorium, as part of a hybrid event organised by our Energy Early Careers team.   As one of the UK’s most eminent civil engineers, Sir John shared invaluable insights on infrastructure, government policy, net zero opportunities, and the challenges of planning and judicial reviews. He also spoke about the formation of the National Infrastructure and Service Transformation Authority (NISTA) – a merger of the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) and the Infrastructure and Projects Authority (IPA) – which he has been instrumental in shaping.   Reflecting on his diverse career, Sir John offered advice that resonates across industries: "Never say no. Because you never know what taking that opportunity you're being offered may open up that you can't see today."   A huge thank you to Sir John and our Energy Early Careers team for making this event possible!   #SustainableGrowth #NetZero #FutureofInfrastructure #ShapingABetterWorld

How do you create a business school that is both sustainable and tailored to the needs of staff and students? We are proud to have partnered with the University of Southampton to refurbish the former Lloyd’s Register Global Technology Centre into Building 175 - a modern, adaptable hub for Southampton Business School. Our multidisciplinary team reconfigured the internal layout and building systems to create flexible spaces that support both individual and group learning. Completed in early 2024, Building 175 has already welcomed its first cohort of students. A big thank you to the University of Southampton and our partners, Miltiadou Cook Mitzman architects LLP, for their collaboration on this project. Together, we’ve created a sustainable and innovative learning environment! How resilient are our rail systems to the growing impacts of climate change? We conducted climate-proofing assessments for Deutsche Bahn on four cross-border railway projects linking Germany with Switzerland, Poland, the Netherlands, and Denmark. Our assessments examined the carbon footprint of each project, evaluated climate risks such as extreme heat, cold, flooding, and storms, and reviewed existing mitigation measures alongside potential improvements. The insights gained can help Deutsche Bahn and other rail infrastructure owners and operators understand how extreme weather events may affect their assets, and guide decisions on building and maintaining a more climate-resilient rail network. Arup leads the way in the exploration of sustainable construction materials. The Tai Kok Tsui Pavilion, Hong Kong’s first laminated structural #bamboo project, is a stunning example of sustainable architecture and modern design intertwined with community spirit. Collaborating with the design team, we provided structural engineering services for this groundbreaking initiative, addressing various structural challenges while ensuring compliance with current building regulations set by the government. By utilising bamboo, a rapidly renewable resource, we underscore our commitment to a circular economy and environmental stewardship. Bamboo’s natural resilience and flexibility not only enhance sustainability but also contribute to the creation of an aesthetically pleasing and enduring structure that helps reduce our carbon footprint. By using bamboo, we save 75% embodied carbon if this pavilion is constructed by steel. Let’s celebrate this milestone together and explore the endless possibilities of sustainable living and innovative design!
