How can fly larvae help to resolve the developing world’s waste management challenges? In 2021, The Sanergy Collaborative was selected as an Earthshot Prize finalist for its innovative approach to using fly larvae to convert waste into organic fertiliser. We supported Sanergy by conducting computational fluid dynamics analysis and building a baseline model, which helped the organisation to construct a first-of-its-kind organic recycling facility in Nairobi, Kenya. Our work helped Sanergy to optimise its operational conditions and will support its expansion to other sites in Kenya and beyond. Since becoming an Earthshot Prize finalist, Sanergy’s solutions have saved over 27,000 tonnes of CO2e emissions, while helping to safely remove waste from slums, markets, and agricultural pack houses. The Earthshot Prize is a global prize designed to identify, spotlight and scale groundbreaking solutions to the world’s greatest environmental issues. As Africa's first city to pursue a 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy (CFE) approach, eThekwini Municipality is working toward a future where every kilowatt of municipal energy is carbon-free. We’re excited to be involved in this effort, commissioned by C40 Cities and with support from Energy Unlocked, to advise on strategies for decarbonising city facilities. Our team mapped out a variety of impactful solutions - such as installing solar panels, developing biogas plants, and incorporating battery storage—to cut emissions and secure a more resilient energy supply. By 2030, these efforts could lead to a 42% drop in eThekwini’s reliance on Eskom’s imported electricity, creating stronger energy independence and wider access to clean energy for residents. #ArupChina40 Over four decades, our global expertise and collaborative ethos have played a pivotal role in reshaping China’s urban landscapes with excellence and innovation. The iconic China Central Television (CCTV) Headquarters in Beijing stands as a testament to our extensive cross-continental teamwork, uniting talents from Hong Kong, London and Beijing alongside the world-renowned architect. This award-winning structure comprises two leaning towers of 234m and 194m in height, bent 90° at the top and bottom to form a continuous tube, redefining the traditional form of skyscrapers. The building’s unique support system, depicted through its irregular grid, showcases the strength and support within. As part of the original design team, we collaborated with OMA to provide structural, MEP, geotechnical and fire engineering design, as well as security consulting services. Our innovative solution, embedding the structure in the building’s skin, created an external continuous braced tube system to resist extreme seismic and wind events. Colombia is investing in its decarbonization journey with projects like Vientos Alisios — an offshore wind farm that comprises of 28 bottom-fixed turbines that could generate enough energy to power 100,000 homes per year. The project forms a key element of Colombia's Roadmap for the Deployment of Offshore Wind Energy, which highlights the potential of leveraging offshore wind energy in the country. We've been working with BlueFloat Energy to develop a feasibility study for the project, which will be located 20 miles off the coast of Barranquilla. Although offshore wind is a relatively new industry in the Americas, Colombia is at the forefront of this energy transition, and developments like Vientos Alisios can serve as a case study for future developments in the region. With the effects of climate change straining existing energy systems, many countries and municipalities are now looking to offshore wind as a sustainable solution, helping to reduce emissions and increase energy capacity while revitalizing communities, protecting nature and placing critical infrastructure closer to communities. Our industry is at the beginning of its journey when it comes to understanding its true global impact on nature. We’ve started to see the term Nature Positive applied to buildings without really knowing what it means at the building scale. So together with the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development we’ve launched new research at the UN’s biodiversity gathering #COP16 on how to measure and monitor the nature impacts of buildings across their whole lifecycle. Hear from Sarah Gillhespy one of the lead authors, about what’s at stake, the challenges and how this report shows we can leverage advancements in whole-life carbon measurement to measure whole-life nature impacts. Step into the enchanting garden of the Kiyoharu Art Colony in Yamanashi, Japan. Behold the unveiling of the spectacular 3D-printed ‘White Loop’ slide, a masterpiece that promises a unique and engaging experience for children. Designed by the tech architecture start-up #VUILD, this magical slide intertwines play, art and architecture into a mesmerising playground for little ones. Standing tall at 2m, this whimsical creation, resembling a Mobius wheel, is perfectly tailored for children aged three to five years old. Our services were key in bringing this dream to life - from crafting the structural design of its unique free-form shape to providing technical support for reinforcement methods in line with 3D printing techniques and proposing joining methods for seamless assembly. Crafted with precision using a cutting-edge 3D printer that dispenses glass fiber-filled resin, this slide is not only a visual delight but also a sturdy companion for endless playtime adventures! The slide was designed in 20 parts due to the limited range of motion of the robot arm. These parts were strategically positioned, based on structural analysis, to accommodate the stresses involved. How can we collectively create the momentum needed to address the challenges of climate change? To explore and discuss this question we brought together great minds from across the private sector, government, community and academia for our annual Momentus event, broadcast live globally from the Sydney Opera House. Our panel provided diverse perspectives on the decarbonisation challenge from an environmental and energy, science and research, and engineering and built environment lens. We then had a robust and optimistic discussion with questions from the audience. Highlights included: • The ‘three Vs’ for courage in tackling the climate crisis: vision, vulnerability and verve • How COP31 presents Australia with a window for climate innovation • Designing for decades to drive decarbonisation • Change needs investment, solutions and optimism. Read more about the highlights and watch the full video here: https://bit.ly/3UjhY2w Thank you to our moderator Stan Grant, guest speakers Amanda McKenzie, Dr Katherine Woodthorpe AO FTSE FAICD and Tristram Carfrae RDI, and everyone who attended in person and online.
