“My lasting memory is working in collaboration with scientists and clinicians and particularly how they were so driven by what they were going to use the building for” says James Chimeura, Associate Director at Arup. Meet James, leader of the MEP design on the Paterson Building. Working on behalf of Integrated Health Projects / VINCI and alongside partners BDP (Building Design Partnership Ltd) and Dalkia UK, we are proud to have been part of the team behind the groundbreaking Paterson Building in Manchester. The building houses high specification laboratories, accommodating cutting-edge equipment to advance cancer research and treatment. The Arup design prioritises safety, sustainability, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. In response to the increasing passenger traffic at Oita Airport, a vital international hub in Oita Prefecture, Japan, the Prefecture has embarked on constructing cutting-edge hovercraft terminals. These terminals establish a seamless and efficient transportation link between Oita Airport and Oita city, significantly reducing travel time between the two destinations compared to the conventional land route. Designed by Sou Fujimoto Architects, the city and airport terminals, along with the hovercraft storage boatyard, exude a unique architectural flair. Arup’s structural engineering expertise has been instrumental in bringing this vision to life. The city-side terminal is engineered to withstand earthquakes and tsunamis up to 2m, serving as a crucial evacuation point. On the airport side, traditional Japanese timber joints, with minimal fastenings, grace the terminal. The meticulously designed truss roof system at the boatyard eliminates internal columns, enhancing hovercraft accessibility. Robust concrete walls ensure stability and resilience against lateral forces. With a focus on earthquake resilience and traditional craftsmanship, these terminals redefine transportation infrastructure standards. Let’s celebrate this exceptional addition to Oita's landscape, enhancing convenience and safety for all travellers! Learn more: https://bit.ly/4dKprPh #WeAreArup #OitaHovercraftTerminals #Japan

The HKeToll system in Hong Kong is a game-changer for the daily commute of approximately 600,000 vehicles, enhancing the management of strategic roads during peak hours. In the latest issue of The Arup Journal, we explore how Arup brought together experts from several of our offices around the globe, in collaboration with the local project team, to deliver the first multi-lane, free-flow tolling system for Hong Kong. Learn how we not only improved current traffic conditions but also laid the groundwork for future mobility solutions that may be introduced, such as congestion charging and low-emission zone enforcement in The Arup Journal here: https://lnkd.in/e8u_k4Xf #WeAreArup #ArupJournal #UrbanTransport #SmartMobility #FutureOfTransport

All global cities are facing the consequences of climate change - from extreme heat to flash flooding. Understanding the impact of extreme weather events will be the key to unlocking the right solutions. Great to see the data modelled for our Urban Heat Snapshot in the Financial Times this morning, assessing the urban heat island effect in the City of London. Using our UHeat technology, we are able to map hot spots across urban and rural areas, helping to identify the right interventions for local contexts.
