Construction on Sheep Field Barn at the Henry Moore Studios & Gardens has broken ground! Designed in close collaboration with the client and engagement team, the extension has longevity in mind. The team’s carbon responsible approach utilises reclamation, and re-use of materials, which are themes Moore embodied himself with the purchase, disassembly, and reassembly of the Aisled Barn at Perry Green, a short walk away. The lightweight timber structural frame touches the ground lightly on Steel Screw Pile foundations, which limit disturbance to the agricultural setting, whilst also being significantly lower embodied carbon than their concrete alternatives. In practice, the steel screw piles can be un-screwed at the end of the buildings lifetime and re-used again, which prepares the building for the future circular economy. This structure will be clad in Sheep’s Wool Insulation and Reclaimed Timber from barns in Yorkshire – Moore’s birthplace. Internally, the extension will re-use the existing Sheep Field Barns external cladding, re-planed and re-treated to give the 20-year-old timber another lease of life inside. Open House bookings are now live for tours of Norton Folgate! The tour will consist of three new and retrofitted urban blocks within the Elder Street Conservation Area, between Liverpool Street Station and historic Spitalfields. DSDHA’s contribution to the masterplan is 16 Blossom Street, an office-led mix-use development, leading through to Blossom Yard, which creates a gateway to the surrounding context whilst remaining sensitive to the scale and preserving anonymity. Great to see Norton Folgate has been shortlisted in this year's 'Urban Regeneration' category for the 2024 Brick Awards!

Last Thursday DSDHA Associate Michael Breen showed members of the BCO NextGen around 16 Blossom Street, part of the soon to be completed Norton Folgate scheme. It was great to be able to demonstrate how the character of the historic streetscapes of Blossom Street and Folgate Street have been restored and accentuated as a result of the sensitive development, while Blossom Yard, which has now opened to the public, looked splendid in the sunshine.

DSDHA’s summer outing took place at Horsenden Hill and Farm , located on the outskirts of Ealing. Whether our projects are in an urban or rural context, our studio values believe in the importance of connecting to and getting a better understanding of nature 🍃 ‘Horsenden Hill is a site of varied wildlife, in a place of historical interest with archaeological finds dating back to Neolithic, Roman, Saxon, Tudor, Victorian and more recent times’ which is now an exemplar of co-existence in the city. We learned about the farm’s community approach to farming, sampled local produce, went looking for beavers and learned about their impact on the landscape! 🦫 It was a great chance to come together, catch each other and exchange quality time, while also discussing relevant topics taking place in architecture today.

BCO NextGen is hosting a tour and Q&A at Norton Folgate this Thursday, 1st Aug at 16:00. The tour will walk through DSDHA’s ’16 Blossom Street’, including a retrofit of an arts and crafts pub and ‘Blossom Yard’, a connective courtyard focused on human scale and pedestrian experience - now open to all.
