Great to see the British Concrete Transport Association feature alongside other industry influencers at the Vaculug Limited Road Safety and tyre awareness workshop. The BCTA 'Safety in every turn' campaign highlights and reaffirms the different demands #concrete mixers make on tyres and how that varies from tyres used on other large vehicles on our roads. Education is key and focus on specific industry factors affecting the movement of concrete on the public highway is essential to reduce WRRR (Work Related Road Risk). £90K fine for a fatality that could have been so easily avoided. https://lnkd.in/eQ7X65kE Having recently covered the industry's responsibility, accountability and liability when it comes to managing concrete build up, this investigation and prosecution from the HSENI shows that this tragic incident could've been avoided. The industry's approach to managing build up removal is shocking, and has been for years. A problem that's been created by ignorance and made worse by arrogance, unachievable procedures, and impossible and umanageble rules. The industry talks about lock off to prevent the drum rotation and to ensure the lock is effective, but who do you ensure it's effective? Generally, manufacturer fitted drum locks only prevent the drum rotating up to a maximum residual concrete volume of a 1 cubic metre (2.4t), so what's the procedure if there's more than that? Precast operators often in have well excess of a cubic metre of build up in, sometimes treble, as it's deemed 'acceptable' as the mixer doesn't go on the public highway, and demonstrates a lack of effective planned and preventative maintenance. Accepted unsafe industry practices continue to cause problems in every area of this specialist industry and it's time the real problems were addressed and managed effectively to prevent any further serious injuries and fatalities.
