At the Midlands Innovation 'Securonomics: Universities powering growth' event at The Labour Party conference in Liverpool this week, it was great to hear the Mayors of both the East and West Midlands - Claire Ward and Richard Parker - talk enthusiastically about their aims to make the #Midlands the centre of the Green Energy revolution in the UK. The East Midlands is looking to build on energy initatives such as the West Burton fusion reactor in Nottinghamshire, while the West Midlands is capitalising on innovation zones such as Tyseley Energy Park in Birmingham and others. Professor Aleks Subic, Vice Chancellor of Aston University talked about the success of Midlands Innovation in bringing together universities across the region to address challenges in sectors such as energy, through initiatives like the Energy Research Accelerator and HyDEX. Jane Norman, Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Nottingham talked about the key role of universities in developing skills and helping to unlock the huge potential of the region. Adam Thompson, MP for Erewash and the Chair of the University All Party Parliamentary Group talked about how university spin-outs have the potential to be a huge asset for growth, job-creation and innovation in the region. There was also praise for the Midlands Mindforge investment company, formed by Midlands Innovation universities, which is aiming to raise £250m for university spin-out businesses to commercialise ground-breaking science and technology. #innovation #energy #hydrogen #climatechange #netzero #greenenergy Midlands Engine Midlands Mindforge EBRI - Energy & Bioproducts Research Institute Birmingham Energy Institute University of Birmingham Cranfield University Keele University University of Leicester Loughborough University University of Nottingham Energy Institute University of Nottingham Faculty of Engineering University of Warwick British Geological Survey WMG, University of Warwick Midlands Net Zero Hub Sarah Alton Helen Turner Dan Parsons Leonie Mathers Dr Katherine Mycock Suzanne R.

DELEGATES AT HYDEX SUMMER SCHOOL LEARN ABOUT THE LATEST HYDROGEN TECHNOLOGIES This week HyDEX has been running its Hydrogen Summer School. The Hydrogen Summer School consisted of a one-week programme of lectures from the HyDEX partner university academics, and site visits to world leading hydrogen research and demonstration facilities across the university partnership. The Hydrogen School was attended by around 30 people with an interest in learning more about hydrogen and the latest hydrogen technologies and applications. Delegates came from across the UK to attend the hydrogen school, and also from as far afield as South Korea! The summer school covered subjects ranging from batteries and electrolysers to fuel cells, hydrogen production technologies and much more. Delegates also had the opportunity to tour facilities including fuel cell laboratories, battery electrolyser laboratories at Loughborough University, the hydrogen refueller and ammonia cracker at Tyseley Energy Park in Birmingham, with University of Birmingham, and the Hyper and Turquoise Hydrogen demonstrator at Cranfield University. We want to thank our HyDEX Skills Manager Sarah Gomes, and HyDEX intern, Ipsita Lalwani, for the tremendous work they have done to organise and run the #Hydrogen Summer School! HYDEX LAUNCHES NEW HYDROGEN 'TOOLKIT' FOR LOCAL AUTHORITIES HyDEX has launched a new online 'toolkit' to help Local Authorities gain a better understanding of the potential of hydrogen and how it can be used to support their net-zero ambitions. Achieving Net Zero is a challenge that requires action across all areas of the country. While international climate negotiations and national emissions targets may dominate the headlines, many of the decisions taking the UK towards Net Zero will be taken at the local level, in City and County Halls, by devolved administrations, and by local partnerships that aim to enable behaviour change in their communities. HyDEX’s hydrogen toolkit has been developed specifically for local leaders – both in Local Authorities and elsewhere – to guide their decisions and clarify some of the myths and misunderstandings about Hydrogen. It provides a short, accessible introduction oriented towards policy decision making. A workshop took place today, featuring presentations from Chris Sims of University of Nottingham, Kelly Manders of Cadent Gas Limited and specialists from Arup.
