One of the East Midlands Hydrogen partners, the East Midlands Institute of Technology, is inviting tenders for the delivery of research to inform and shape the future of green energy skills for the #EastMidlands region.     Partners across the East Midlands Hydrogen consortium are working hard to bring forward a #netzero energy strategy for the region, replacing fossil fuels in transportation, in homes and in energy intensive industries. One of the key challenges that needs to be addressed is the #skills gap – having enough people trained, capable and knowledgeable in the production, management and utilisation of new sources of energy.     The East Midlands Institute of Technology is working with East Midlands Freeport on the development of future energy skills, to provide a template for how skills and education delivery should support and mirror economic growth priorities in a geographical area.    If you have a strong track record in energy planning, skills planning and regional economic growth, the East Midlands Institute of Technology would like to hear from you. In partnership with East Midlands Freeport and East Midlands Hydrogen, the successful organisation can equip the Future Energy Skills Hub to drive a hydrogen and green energy revolution. Becky R. is Marketing Director at Roadgas Ltd, a local Small / Medium-sized Enterprise (SME) that supplies compressed and liquified green gas refuelling infrastructure and equipment for dispensing alternative fuels into the heavy transport sector. In this article, Becky explains why Roadgas Ltd is proud to be a member of the East Midlands Hydrogen Consortium and shares her thoughts on the importance of low carbon growth for our region’s future. Becky says: "The opportunity for my business to join East Midlands Hydrogen, the largest inland hydrogen cluster in the UK with a unique collaboration of over 60 public and private partners and businesses, large and small, across all aspects of the hydrogen value chain, was a given. "I believe this will be a game-changer for our region. The sheer potential of this is unprecedented. We have a truly unique cluster of energy generation sites, poised to drive our green energy revolution. 20 major employers have said they need more than ten terawatt-hours of hydrogen per year to decarbonise their operations and East Midlands Hydrogen Consortium members are working to ensure as much of that is generated and stored in the #EastMidlands as possible. "I’m very excited about the opportunity for #hydrogen in our region. Green Hydrogen: Fuelling the Future (Pint of Science) Last week we ran a special event in Loughborough on the subject of Green Hydrogen. The event was part of the national #PintofScience festival and included a range of speakers showcasing and exploring the different opportunities for green #hydrogen technology, including clean cooking, aviation, buildings and cars. Dr Chris Duffield from Intelligent Energy spoke about the manufacture and development of lightweight hydrogen fuel cell systems, demonstrating the different applications for fuel cells, from power generation replacements for diesel generators to UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicle). Lizzie Ashton from the LoCEL-H2 Project provided an overview of the battery electrolyser research being done at Loughborough University, and outlined the aims of the project to deliver a new source of clean, reliable, and sustainable energy storage for off-grid communities in Africa. Other speakers included Michael Yandrasits from Johnson Matthey, Ashley van Bruygom from the National Centre for Combustion and Aerothermal Technology (NCCAT), and Matt Brenton (doctoral researcher). The event concluded with a lively panel discussion and Q&A allowing the audience to gain further insight to how green hydrogen is disrupting traditional energy systems by creating a more sustainable future, powered by hydrogen as a clean energy carrier. Earlier this week, Will Morlidge, D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership Chief Executive and Co-Chair of East Midlands Hydrogen, addressed an audience of investors at UKREiiF in Leeds. During his keynote, Will highlighted the seven priorities of the East Midlands Hydrogen consortium and the investment and collaboration opportunities it offers. Will said: “East Midlands Hydrogen is an industry-led, public-private partnership, aimed at boosting the energy revolution in the #EastMidlands by growing the UK’s largest inland #hydrogen cluster. 20 major employers have said they need more than ten terawatt-hours of hydrogen per year to decarbonise their operations, and we’re working to ensure as much of that is generated and stored in the East Midlands as possible. On Friday, HyDEX supported the #EMStor project event at the British Geological Survey in Keyworth, Nottinghamshire. EMStor is a hydrogen storage research project in collaboration with British Geological Survey, Cadent Gas Limited, School of GeoSciences at The University of Edinburgh, Star Energy and Net Zero Strategy. Learnings from the Ofgem funded Strategic Innovation Fund study examined the feasibility of different #hydrogen storage solutions in the subsurface. It was great to see both new and familiar faces who were interested in learning about the options for geological hydrogen storage in the Midlands, including Rushcliffe Member of Parliament, Ruth Edwards MP. It is the ambition of EMStor to build upon the feasibility study and to develop a geological hydrogen storage demonstrator. We look forward to learning more as the study progresses! East Midlands Freeport and Freeport East have announced a new partnership to help decarbonise transport, confirming their commitment at UKREiiF in Leeds earlier this week. Tom Newman-Taylor, Chief Executive of East Midlands Freeport, said: “This exciting initiative illustrates how Freeports can be forerunners in the decarbonisation of transport and industry. We’re looking forward to working with Freeport East and our partners to deliver greener freight along this important corridor.
