"Cartwheel offers vital, timely support for our local youth. Despite exceptional local mental health providers, students face long waits for help. No one wants students with deep sadness or anxiety turned away or to have to wait months to see a therapist. Every child deserves prompt support, and Cartwheel can provide the timely high-quality support our youth urgently need.” - Amy Fox Anyanwu, Assistant Superintendent, Montgomery County Educational Service Center According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the share of high school students feeling persistently sad or hopeless increased by 40% over the last decade. Getting timely access to mental health can have a dramatic impact on student outcomes. Within the first few weeks of our partnership with the Montgomery County Educational Service Center, more than 50 students were referred for services and offered appointments with a licensed therapist with no waitlist! In 2022, I worked with Vivek Murthy to help write the Surgeon General’s Advisory on youth mental health. Today, my company, Cartwheel, serves more than 100 school districts on the frontlines of the mental health crisis. During my time in government and over the past two years working with schools, students, and families, I’ve seen firsthand how social media can impact kids and teens and what we can do about it. The Surgeon General’s warning outlined in the below op-ed is a serious and worthwhile idea to consider — and will take time to implement. What can we do in the meantime? I was really excited to see Dr. Murthy to also call for schools to “ensure that classroom learning and social time are phone-free experiences.”  Limiting phones during the school day is a practical, common sense step that more and more schools and parents are embracing. I'm a strong advocate for expanded mental health services in schools, but ADDING new programs isn't the only answer. Sometimes taking things AWAY — like phones — can also help. I’d be curious to hear from any school leaders or parents who have limited phone use on their campuses or at home. What’s working? What’s not working? What lessons have you learned that others should know? What you do think about the Surgeon General's message? In recognition of #MentalHealthActionDay, we are proud to stand alongside a growing coalition of organizations committed to expanding access to mental health services for youth and their families. 50% of lifetime mental health conditions emerge by age 14, but most don’t seek care until 8-10 years later. Early intervention not only reduces the severity of symptoms but can change the trajectory of a child’s life. Today’s theme, ”‘Dedicate One Hour to Connection,” reinforces the importance of community in supporting students through their mental health journey. Having a trusted group of peers, parents, educators, clinicians, and other adults can make a world of difference. Feeling grateful today to the Cartwheel team and to our school partners. We recently surveyed more than 1,000 school counselors and staff to get feedback on their experience with some of our new features and processes, and here are a few comments we received: "I have really appreciated how responsive Cartwheel has been to feedback from our school based staff. I also applaud the new online portal - approving referrals and tracking where students are in the process has been so helpful! - Psychologist and Administrator at Acton Boxborough Regional School District in MA "The efficiency and ease of the process and portal and the quality of the therapists have been beyond impressive." - Social worker at Stoneham Public Schools in MA "I appreciate the communication. It is helpful to know the progress/status of the referral. Knowing when a student starts services helps us create a plan of support in the building." - Social worker at Bloomington Public Schools District 87 in Illinois "The referral process is super easy and straightfoward. The platform is user friendly and intuitive and Stacy Swasey has been amazing to work with. She is super responsive and always very helpful. We have received great feedback from our students about the quality of care as well." - Counselor at Millbury Junior/Senior High School in MA "Referral process is super easy, the platform is user friendly and easy to navigate, love seeing the communication details in the platform, outreach to families happens quickly, Cartwheel is very inclusive and thoughtful of client's identity and needs/preferences." - Counselor at Beverly Public Schools in MA "Cartwheel is very responsive and quick with our referrals and their collaboration with me has been really helpful to best support our students." - School-based clinician at Prospect Hill Academy Charter School in MA "All of my students working with Cartwheel are satisfied with their care. Students get matched quickly and receive care within a week or two of referral, which is huge...We have another referral service that takes a bit longer and doesn't seem to have the match rate that Cartwheel has." - Counselor at Methuen Public Schools in MA "The counselors have reached out to me and are really invested in what I have seen in the student, they trust my analysis of the student's needs." - Counselor in MIAMISBURG CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT in Ohio "While we are just starting out with Cartwheel, I have been very impressed with the support we have received and I appreciate the communication with our program manager." - Administrator at Brookville Local Schools in Ohio "I appreciate the responsiveness to my questions; ability to track status; connecting a therapist with my student." - Social worker at North Shore School District 112 in Illinois "Cartwheel is very responsive to our district's needs. This is especially true in their ability to find quality therapists who are multilingual." - Administrator at Salem Public Schools in MA

Proud to present with our partners at Montgomery County Educational Service Center yesterday at the Ohio Educational Service Center Association (OESCA) Spring Conference. Amy Fox Anyanwu, Jess Davies, and the entire team are breaking new ground in providing access to mental health resources and support for every child in their county. Our joint session highlighted how we’re working together to expand access and reduce common barriers with our virtual model. Since starting this year, we’ve brought on four new districts, provided care to 78 students, and reduced waiting times from months to days. We’re honored to come alongside the work of this amazing team to help serve the students of Montgomery County.

At Ohio Educational Service Center Association (OESCA)'s Spring Conference MCESC Assistant Superintendent, Amy Fox Anyanwu and Director of Social Emotional Learning, Jess Davies presented “Enhancing Mental Health Access - Teletherapy Consortium for School Districts” alongside Cartwheel’s Joe English and Ben Mark. Attendees learned how an ESC addressed a student mental health backlog with a partnership that resulted in a teletherapy consortium. These session leaders shared practical, scalable strategies for ESCs, highlighting successful consortium methods and actionable insights. The breakout provided industry-wide solutions to growing student mental health needs.
