To help reduce drug use and violence, and fortify mental health, Project HOPE facilitates mental health groups led by local community members like Fatima. Fatima leads a mental health group of young men in Kano, Nigeria. The youth mental health group, which was founded earlier this year, holds sessions once a week, exploring all issues with regards to mental health care, what support looks like, as well as the dangers that drug use poses. Today, on #WorldHumanitarianDay, we confront a grim truth that cannot be ignored. In 2023, the global humanitarian community experienced its deadliest year on record, with 280 aid workers tragically losing their lives to violence - a staggering 137% increase from the previous year. Sadly, the violence persists. As of August 7th, 176 aid workers have already been killed in 2024, and many more continue to risk their lives in conflict zones worldwide. Most of these casualties are national staff - brave individuals serving their own communities with steadfast dedication. Attacks on aid workers and their facilities during armed conflicts are blatant violations of international humanitarian law. Yet, these atrocities continue with little to no accountability. The normalization of violence against those who devote their lives to helping others is unacceptable. As we remember those we've lost, we stand in solidarity with our fellow humanitarians and the victims of conflicts everywhere. We call on those in power to uphold international law and protect aid workers as they carry out their vital, lifesaving work. Project HOPE #ActForHumanity

In the lead up to #WorldHumanitarianDay, we honor the 456 aid workers who lost their lives in service to others in 2023 and 2024. These tragic losses underscore the urgent need to protect humanitarian workers and uphold International Humanitarian Law. Project HOPE calls on world leaders to investigate and prosecute violations, ensuring accountability for attacks on aid workers and civilians. As crises multiply globally, we must safeguard those who risk everything to help communities in need. Join us in remembering fallen colleagues and demanding action to protect humanitarian spaces. https://lnkd.in/g4iX3Whj

The World Health Organization (WHO) has just declared the upsurge of mpox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and several other African countries a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). As an international community, we must support the immediate scale up of response and ensure equitable access to vaccines, therapeutics, diagnostics and other tools. Together, we can make a difference in combating this mpox outbreak and strengthening global health security.
In light of the spread of #mpox outside #DRC, and the potential for further international spread within and outside Africa, I have decided to convene an Emergency Committee under the International Health Regulations to advise me on whether the outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern. The committee will meet as soon as possible and will be made up of independent experts from a range of relevant disciplines from around the world.
