This week our next webinar will take place. Have you registered?
Join Western Dredging Association (WEDA) for our next webinar on Wednesday, Feb. 28, at 2 PM EDT, "Beach Placement Safety Educational Materials." General Overview: Due to a series of incidents related to dredging operations at USACE projects across the nation since September 2020, including two fatalities at beach and dredge placement sites, USACE is reaffirming its commitment to a safety culture and safe working environment. This includes direct engagement by US Army Corps of Engineers District Commanders and leaders at district dredging projects, sharing best practices, taking immediate corrective actions to address discrepancies, and ensuring all staff are properly trained. Following the Board of Investigations (BOIs) review into the above-mentioned fatalities, USACE determined adequate training does not exist for the landside portion of dredging/beach nourishment projects to educate staff on adequate engineering controls where the work interfaces with the public. This webinar will discuss different construction and safety aspects of beach nourishment projects, including special considerations that must be taken when working in an environment that may lead to lots of interactions with the #public. PDH Credit: A certificate for one (1) professional development hour will be available for all participants who attend this webinar or view the recorded webinar online. Presenter Bio: Christopher Hayward, P.E. is a coastal engineer working in the Coastal Engineering Section in the Design Branch, Engineering Division of the Los Angeles District, where he has been working since 2017. He is a technical lead for several beach nourishment, navigation dredging, and coastal structure repair projects. His responsibilities include the preparation of project plans, specifications, design reports, technical studies, and construction support for coastal engineering projects as well as performing condition inspections of the Los Angeles District’s inventory of coastal structures. Prior to joining the Los Angeles District, Mr. Hayward worked at Gahagan and Bryant Associates, Inc. and Anchor QEA, both located in the greater Baltimore area and serving the Mid-Atlantic region. At these firms, Mr. Hayward performed topographic and hydrographic surveying, construction management, project design, cost estimating and project management of dredging, beach nourishment and sediment remediation projects. Mr. Hayward is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island and holds a bachelor’s degree in ocean engineering. He is a licensed Professional Civil Engineer in the state of Maryland.
