📣 Hear from one of the most powerful women in the Swedish mining and steel industry Earlier this year our Technology Manager Terése Edholm received the recognition of being one of the most powerful women in the Swedish mining and steel industry, announced by Swedish Association for Mines, Mineral and Metal Producers - Svemin, the Swedish iron and steel producers' association - Jernkontoret and the Swedish Association of Industrial Employers - Industriarbetsgivarna. Terése shares her thoughts about how mining has progressed over her 13 years working in the industry, how it will continue to change and what’s behind Sweden’s mining legacy as a country where many new technologies have been trialed and commercialized. “With great minds comes great mines, and I believe this industry is an actual gold mine for early talents to start their careers – either in existing mines expanding their technology capabilities to meet the challenges of the future, or within any of the new players in the field” says Terése Edholm, Technology Manager at ABB Process Industries Sweden. 🔍 Simexmin 2024 Recap: Reflections and Paths Forward Simexmin 2024 in Ouro Preto was a milestone for professionals in mining and mineral exploration, featuring rich discussions and innovations. Here are some highlights and suggestions to enrich future editions: Positives: High-Level Debates: Panels on critical resources and ESG provided valuable insights, standing out for the quality of interactions and the relevance of the topics discussed. ExpoSIMEXMIN: The fair was a success, with various companies showcasing their latest innovations and technologies, facilitating networking among participants. Areas for Improvement: Time Management and Organization: Many attendees noted a lack of adequate time for more personal networking. It would be beneficial to organize smaller groups to facilitate introductions and discussions among participants who do not know each other. Event Layout and Location: Optimizing the exhibition space layout for more efficient flow and considering relocating the event to a more accessible area, such as a city with a nearby airport, would enhance logistics for participants. Today is International Women’s Day, and we at the Critical Minerals Association (UK) want to give a big shoutout to all the brilliant and inspiring women we know and work with in the mining sector. A 2022 report from Ernst & Young Global Ltd. estimated that only 12% of the global mining and metals workforce is composed of women. And despite this, women have been at the forefront of every one of our initiatives. Founder and CEO Kirsty Benham leads our UK association, COO Olimpia Pilch leads the Critical Minerals International Alliance, and Namali Mackay heads up the Critical Minerals Association Australia. They are supported by a larger team of women in mining, including Eileen Maes, Lily Dickson and Becca D., and the Chairs of our working groups, who are world-leading experts in their respective fields: Lucy Smith, Lucy Crane, and Jane Joughin. We would also like to highlight the following women among our membership, for their invaluable contributions over the years to the Association's work: Amanda van Dyke, Jessica Green, Philipa Varris, Margery (Marge) Ryan, Emma Schofield, Georgia Alice Rigoni, Fiona Cessford, Lydia Bridges, Sarah Gordon, Rose Clarke, Anna Gibbs, Adriana Merino Zamora and Marla Gale. The CMA (UK) is dedicated to highlighting and promoting the work of women in mining, for the diversity of an industry reflects its capacity for resilience and innovation. The speakers for our 3rd Annual Conference, held on the 28 November 2023 in London, were 53% women. As the energy transition gathers pace, the mining and metals sectors will prove to be among the most important sectors of our modern and green economy. Women have a big role to play in that transformation, and this role is sure to expand and contribute to the overcoming of many challenges. Happy International Women’s Day!
