Preventing whale entanglements is one of our top priorities. Last week, partners, including funding recipients of the Whalesafe Gear Adoption Fund, met in Moncton, New Brunswick to present the results of their gear trials testing lower breaking-strength and on-demand fishing gear. The results of these trials will help inform our Whalesafe Gear Strategy, which will guide the development and use of whalesafe fishing gear in fisheries across Canada to prevent and reduce whale entanglements. Hello, Just sharing this as our business is named after Ailsa Craig which is a bird sanctuary on the West Coast of Scotland. We need your voice to get a game-changing decision over the line - an end to industrial trawling for sandeels in Scotland’s waters. Sandeels are a vital source of food for our seabirds, including kittiwakes and puffins, which are globally threatened with extinction. As a staple food for other Scottish sea life, such as whales, seals and salmon, sandeels are essential to the health of our seas. But sandeels are under immense pressure. Overfishing on an industrial scale means hundreds of thousands of tonnes of sandeels are taken from the North Sea each year. None of the UK Governments support sandeel fishing, but they need to take key steps to stop it. Last week, the Scottish Government announced a consultation proposing to end industrial sandeel fishing in Scottish waters and we need you to send them a message supporting this ban. This consultation, together with the one for English waters earlier this year, would help end industrial sandeel fishing in UK waters. This is the single greatest action we can take to save our seabirds. Add your voice today to help Scotland’s globally important populations of seabirds survive. #sealife #nature #AilsaCraig #sustainability

“Back 50 years ago, at this time of the year, every fishing community was the busiest place in the world. You had boats starting up an hour or so before daylight and people going to bed at midnight six days a week. And today, you know you don't see that, except when fish are plentiful.” - Barry Darby, retired sixth generation fisher, Changing Course. Capelin are an important food source for local communities, but they’re also vital food for other fish like Atlantic cod, halibut and salmon. If we want to see rebuilt fisheries in our lifetime, we need to rethink how we manage fish at the bottom of the food chain. If we give capelin the chance, they can rebuild. Learn more and take action at Oceana.ca/ProtectCapelin.

Human rights issues as well as IUU fishing are well-documented in the tuna industry. Consequently, much of FishWise’s work focuses on these complex supply chains, with vessels often operating in remote areas. This World Tuna Day, May 2, we are highlighting how FishWise is pushing businesses to build more ethical tuna supply chains. Here's how: https://lnkd.in/gY6RMWZ3

ICYMI: Scotland’s domestic retail market for scampi is supplied by its langoustine bottom-trawl fishery. But this fishery is associated with serious environmental harm – most notably, high levels of bycatch of other marine wildlife. In our latest blog, we look at what impact the scampi industry has in Scotland’s seas. We also set out what supermarkets, producers and other supply chain players can do to resolve this environmental harm. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/eXXiYR9k
