Investing in Nature to Solve Business Challenges | Creating a World Worth Living In by recognising Nature as Business-Critical Infrastructure | CEO & Co-Founder @Rebalance Earth

🌍 Reflecting on the ULI C Change Summit 2024: Climate Adaptation Through Nature 🌍 Thank you to ULI Europe for organising a brilliant conference in Barcelona, where we tackled some of the most pressing climate challenges we face today. I opened the day with a presentation on how Nature must play a central role in climate adaptation, with a particular focus on water – “𝙩𝙤𝙤 𝙢𝙪𝙘𝙝, 𝙩𝙤𝙤 𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚, 𝙩𝙤𝙤 𝙙𝙞𝙧𝙩𝙮.” 1️⃣ Too Much: The devastating floods in Carlisle, UK, impacting sites like the Shell station and McVities factory, highlight how traditional flood defences alone are insufficient. These events underline the need for holistic, Nature-based solutions to protect business continuity and mitigate stranded asset risk. 2️⃣ Too Little: Cape Town, South Africa’s “Day Zero” crisis is a stark reminder of the severe risks tied to water scarcity. As we face a future of increased droughts, cities need robust, sustainable strategies for water management. 3️⃣ Too Dirty: Paris, France’s €1.4 billion Seine River project showcases the complexity of water quality restoration. Although it brought the Seine closer to being swimmable, recent delays underscore the ongoing challenge of pollution control. 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲-𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: From river “rewiggling” projects in Florida to sponge cities in Hangzhou and Nanning, Nature-based solutions are proving effective in managing water and building climate resilience. These examples show how aligning with Nature can provide resilient and impactful outcomes. 𝗔 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗲𝘁: Like Dick Fosbury’s innovative “Fosbury Flop” in high jump, adapting to a changing environment requires rethinking our approach. We can drive strong financial returns and environmental resilience by treating Nature as a valuable asset. Thanks again to ULI for bringing us together and fostering these important discussions. Let’s create a world worth living in by recognising Nature’s value in protecting our real estate investments and cities. #ClimateAdaptation #NatureAsAnAsset #NatureBasedSolutions #Resilience #SustainableFinance #ULICChangeSummit #ULISummit #WaterManagement

At last week’s ULI C Change Summit, Henrike Waldburg, FRICS Waldburg of UNION INVESTMENT, and Roger Baumann MRICS of Zurich Insurance joined Andrea Carpenter to discuss Managing Transition: Balancing Sustainability with Business Pressures. The urgent need for climate action in real estate is undeniable. They explored the balance between corporate-level strategies and fund-level decarbonization efforts, emphasizing the importance of data, collaboration, and long-term thinking. As we face increasing environmental challenges, now is the time to move beyond talk and take real steps toward sustainable investments. Key takeaways included: ·  Data is fundamental to progress - "Our data is not correct" is no longer an excuse - it’s basic housekeeping! ·  Collaboration is essential - Working together is critical to moving forward. ·  Specific training should be a fundamental part of the process. ·  We must convince senior leaders to engage, hear these insights, and bring fresh ideas to the table, especially by embracing new startups. ·  Finally Real estate may be evolving, but the opportunities for sustainability are growing. #ULICChangeSummit

It was great returning to Barcelona last week for the ULI Europe Office & Mixed Use Council. We were welcomed to a vibrant city, abuzz with visitors, and whose local economy is the envy of Europe. 🏢 Barcelona has become more business friendly under its new mayor. With the tenor of planning discussions more constructive, creative mixed-use developments dot the city. Office employees have returned, at least four days a week, and there is a palpable energy to the city's traditional CBD. Catalysed by creative companies, especially those in the gaming space, Grade A vacancies are negligible and historic rents are being achieved in the city’s best buildings. Family offices have taken note. They’ve become a protagonist investor in the current capital market. 🏗️  As ever, the highlight of our Council day was visiting iconic office projects. The 22@ submarket has transformed substantially since our last Council visit in 2017, with new towers along Diagonal and a mix of public and private uses that creates a functional live-work-play-learn environment. We were reminded that the default is transformation and the exception is new build. 1960s skyscrapers still have a role to play in our cities. Creative transformations are easier when buildings offer efficient floor plates and are already well-connected to the urban fabric, both commercially and politically. 😎 We couldn’t have asked for a better day to take in iconic views of Barcelona. I am once again left energised from our time together and genuinely optimistic about the outlook for European offices. 🦉 “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.”   --  Sir Winston Churchill    Thank you to our guest speakers Carmina Ganyet and Sergio Fernandes as well as my co-chair Honoré Achille Simo Simo for assisting with coordination.  The day wouldn’t have been as memorable without the gracious support of our hosts Cuatrecasas and Hines Spain. Muchas gracias! The magic of the Council experience is due to its passionate participants Edward Bates Maarten Briët Xavier Denis Daniel Mahoney Fernando Da Col Joanna Wojnarowska Nathan Wilson Joost Hulshof Ramón Camiña Lisa Hirsch Tom Ascough I am grateful for the steadfast support provided by ULI Allison Berry Nadine Jefferies Joey Udrea 📢 If you’re interested in participating in the ULI European Office & Mixed Use Council, drop me a note.
