The afternoon session of the “2nd Hydrogen Airports Conference” at Torino Airport delivered valuable discussions on both long-term hydrogen strategies and real-world applications. Experts from easyJet, Ikigai, F2i SGR, Avinor, and SEA Milan Airports explored their long-term strategies for integrating hydrogen into aviation, with AVINOR sharing their initiative to make Norway a global test arena for zero-emission aviation. EasyJet highlighted the critical role hydrogen propulsion will play in decarbonising the sector, emphasising its potential to shape a more sustainable future. The conversation continued with Royal Schiphol Group, Torino Airport, and Hamburg Airport, which presented the first results of their hydrogen pilot projects. These projects are pushing the boundaries of innovation within the airport ecosystem, including the use of Ground Power Units, airside hydrogen production, and testing hydrogen within a commercial aircraft. The pilots demonstrate significant progress toward implementing hydrogen as a key element in the journey to zero-emission aviation. Special thanks to: Karsten Uhing, Rita Pucci, sophie colozier, Monica Cochi, Vicki Hughes, Vincent de Haes, Alexandros Ouzounopoulos, Theodoros Papachristou, Torino Airport, To70 Aviation and TULIPS – Green Airports for the great cooperation and organisation. See you soon!

The morning session of the "2nd Hydrogen Airports Conference" at Torino Airport was packed with insightful discussions and inspiring talks on hydrogen technologies and the pivotal role they will play in the decarbonisation of airports and the aviation sector! Elisabetta Oliveri, Chairwoman of Torino Airport, kicked things off with an inspiring talk on how regional airports can lead the charge in advancing new energy aircraft and transforming into smart energy hubs. Initiatives like Hydrogen Ground Power Units in the TULIPS – Green Airports project were highlighted as key steps toward zero-emission travel. Vincent de Haes, Sustainable Aviation Consultant at To70 Aviation, provided a recap of the previous Hydrogen Airports Conference in Brussels, setting the stage for the day's discussions on zero-emission aviation! Sebastian Placzek from DG DEFIS, European Commission presented the AZEA vision, showcasing the plan to build a hydrogen ecosystem that not only cuts CO2 emissions but fosters competitiveness and innovation in aviation. Meanwhile, Helen Leadbetter from the UK CAA shared the UK’s Hydrogen strategy, stressing the importance of early collaboration with regulators to pave the way for new technologies. We also heard updates from the EU Green Airport projects like TULIPS, STARGATE, OLGA, and got a sneak peek of GOLIAT—each showcasing hydrogen-powered innovations and discussing the opportunities and challenges for airports. The morning session closed with Professor Fulvia Quagliotti, who led a thought-provoking discussion with Peter Gallen, Director of Infrastructure at ZeroAvia and Irwin Kerboriou, Lead H2 airport operations at Beyond Aero on the infrastructure needs of new energy aircraft. Kudos to the moderator Marcello Baricco, Professor at the University of Torino, for steering these incredible conversations! ✈️💡

The ACI EUROPE Regional Airports’ Forum meet in Budapest for their 36th meeting. With this edition kindly hosted by Budapest Airport, the Forum aims to provide a platform for regional airports to exchange knowledge, share best practice and discuss issues of common interest. On the agenda this time are lively debates on passenger traffic, winter preparedness and EES implementation. Attendees will also consider increasing delays in the network and the impact this has on regional airports – as well as potential solutions. Notably, this meeting coincides with the release of the ACI EUROPE Promoting Destinations Guide - a comprehensive framework for enhancing collaboration between regional airports, Destination Marketing Organisations (DMOs), and National Tourism Organisations (NTOs). The new Guidance on the ICAO Balanced Approach procedure has just been released by our sister organisation, ACI World - Airports Council International. As co-authors, ACI EUROPE together with our members have contributed to this comprehensive overview of the procedure and provided guidance for its successful application in the development of noise management strategies. The ICAO Balanced Approach is the right, internationally agreed-upon tool to address noise problems at local level, but its track record of implementation has been poor, even in the EU where it has been enshrined into law. With this new guidance, ACI sets out to address this lack of consistency and provide practical guidance to improve its application. Download the free resource here: https://shorturl.at/x4OUE Stay tuned for the upcoming guidance from ACI EUROPE, specifically designed to address the challenges and opportunities in the European context.
