Speaking during the webinar on  on "Climate-Sanitation Nexus: Unlocking Climate Finance for Sanitation" our Regional Director Katerina Syngellakis emphasized the need to prioritize sanitation in national climate plans, adopt innovative approaches and solutions and, above all, mobilize climate finance to respond to both challenges related to climate sanitation and poor sanitation systems. Yesterday, we had the honor of meeting the Minister of Environment, Sustainable Development and Ecological Transition of Côte d’Ivoire H.E. Konan Jacques Assahoré. The meeting was an opportunity to discuss our ongoing collaboration on accelerating the country’s transition to #GreenGrowth and officially introduce our new Africa Regional Director, Katerina Syngellakis. The team, which included GGGI Cote d'Ivoire Country Representative, Olola Vieyra, PMP, the Regional Representative for Green Investment and West Africa Program Antti Inkinen and other staff members, was warmly welcomed by the Minister, who reaffirmed his commitment to advancing sustainable development in the country. H.E. Konan Jacques Assahoré commended the ongoing collaboration between Côte d’Ivoire and GGGI in the joint efforts to support the country’s transition to green economy. Katerina Syngellakis expressed her enthusiasm to build on the impactful work initiated in the country and the Africa Region. She also thanked the Minister for his unwavering support to both Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI)’s country and regional teams. Great and enriching discussions this morning on #ClimateFinance and Sanitation. Together with African Water and Sanitation Association _ Association Africaine de l'Eau et de l'Assainissement (AfWASA) we hosted a webinar on ‘Climate-Sanitation: Unlocking Climate Finance for Sanitation. Today’s Webinar showcased one important thing: that sanitation and climate change are so interlinked. On one hand, sanitation systems are heavily affected by climate change effects. For instance, extreme weather events such as floods and droughts compromise sanitation infrastructure and increase public health risks. On the other hand, poorly managed sanitation systems contribute to greenhouse gas emissions - further exacerbating climate change in a continent already considered as the most vulnerable to the impacts. Speakers and panelists highlighted the need to leverage #ClimateFinance to build resilient sanitation systems. The webinar showcased the need to integrate sanitation interventions into national climate planning to unlock green and climate finance for the sector. Additionally, there is need to develop bankable sanitation projects, strengthen collaboration and cooperation between all actors (Public, private, civil society, research and academia, etc.), and invest in building the capacity of the various stakeholders to ensure that there are enough skills, resources and capacity to deploy innovative tools and solutions and mobilize resources necessary to build climate-friendly and resilient sanitation systems.
