UNDP is the leading United Nations organization fighting to end the injustice of poverty, inequality, and climate change. Working with our broad network of experts and partners in 170 countries, we help nations to build integrated, lasting solutions for people and planet. UNDP has been operational in Lebanon for nearly five decades, since 1960. Its presence in the country has been continuous in the best of times and in the worst of times, in times of war and peace. The period immediately following the Lebanese Civil War which had raged since 1975 until 1990 and which was superimposed by further invasions and military occupation, was a period of transition for the country as well as for UNDP. As an organization, we have had to continually evolve in orientation and coverage to help in the identification of national needs and priorities in an often rapidly changing development and security setting in order to support the achievement of long-term development objectives. As of recently, we have been, along with WHO and our sister UN agencies, working with the government to address the most urgent health system needs in terms of responding to the COVID19 pandemic. The next phase of UNDP’s COVID-19 crisis response is designed to help decision-makers look beyond recovery, towards 2030, making choices and managing complexity and uncertainty in four main areas: governance, social protection, green economy, and digital disruption. It encompasses our role in technically leading the UN’s socio-economic response. In the aftermath of the devastating explosion in the port of Beirut, our immediate support will prioritize the restoration of livelihoods and small businesses; debris management; and access to justice for impacted vulnerable groups. This will complement urgent relief efforts of sister UN agencies in the first stage response.

Aammiq, #Lebanon’s largest remaining freshwater wetland, takes the spotlight this February 2 on #WorldWetlandsDay! Covering 280 hectares, it is a vital biodiversity hotspot, home to over 250 bird species and diverse wildlife. As a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, Aammiq plays a crucial role in environmental conservation. With funding from the Italian Government through AICS and in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, UNDP is supporting Aammiq Wetland in developing a comprehensive management plan to preserve and protect this important yet fragile ecosystem. Safeguarding our wetlands is key to our planet’s health and essential to healthier future generations. في اليوم العالمي للأراضي الرطبة، نُسلط الضوء على محميّة عميق، وهي أكبر الأراضي الرطبة من المياه العذبة المتبقية في #لبنان. تمتد على مساحة 280 هكتارًا، وهي نقطة حيوية للتنوع البيولوجي، وهي موطن لأكثر من 250 نوعًا من الطيور والحياة البرية المتنوعة. وباعتبارها من الأراضي الرطبة ذات الأهمية الدولية بحسب اتفاقية رامسار، تلعب محمية عمّيق دوراً أساسيّاً في الحفاظ على البيئة. وبتمويل من الحكومة الإيطالية من خلال الوكالة الإيطالية للتعاون الإنمائي الدولي وبالشراكة مع وزارة البيئة، يدعم برنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي هذه المحميّة في وضع خطة إدارة شاملة للحفاظ على نظامها البيئي الهام والهش وحمايته. إن الحفاظ على أراضينا الرطبة أمر أساسي لصحة كوكبنا وضروري لسلامة الأجيال القادمة.

To strengthen transparency and enhance local governance practices, #UNDP, with funding from the German Government through KfW Development Bank, is organizing training sessions on the Public Procurement Law and effective procurement planning, in partnership with Basil Fuleihan Institute of Finance and Economics. This year’s training kicked off with the municipalities of coastal Metn, including Sin El Fil, Dekweneh, Jdeideh Baouchrieh Al Sadd, Chiyah, Bourj Hammoud, and Jadra, and will be conducted consecutively in different regions across #Lebanon. بهدف دعم البلديّات على تعزيز #الشفافية والحوكمة المحلية ينظم برنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي بتمويل من الحكومة الألمانية عبر البنك الألماني للتنمية #KfW دورات تدريبية حول قانون الشراء العام وتخطيط الشراء الفعّال، بالشراكة مع معهد باسل فليحان المالي والاقتصادي. وقد انطلقت الدورات لهذا العام مع بلديات المتن الساحلي بما فيها سن الفيل، الدكوانة، الجديدة البوشرية السد، الشياح، برج حمود وجدرا، لتكمل تباعا في مناطق مختلفة من #لبنان.

This isn't science fiction - it's our potential reality. If we don't act now on climate change, Lebanon could face devastating transformations by 2050. Eight years ago, UNDP created this video warning about Lebanon's climate future. Today, reality is unfolding before our eyes with record-breaking January temperatures. In response, UNDP has been supporting the Government of Lebanon and the Ministry of Environment Nasser Yassin in preparing, funding and implementing its climate agenda to minimize the impacts of increasing temperatures on Lebanon. Our future depends on urgent, collective action today.

As part of its renewable energy programme to powering local Institutions across Lebanon, UN-Habitat has successfully implemented 37 solar energy projects across Lebanon, bringing clean, reliable power to public institutions and local communities! 🤝 🏡 ⚡ ☀️ Thanks to generous funding from the European Union, and in partnership with UNDP Lebanon, we’ve recently installed new photovoltaic (PV) systems in 18 institutions with a total capacity of 1,086 kWp. That means better public services for hundreds of thousands of people! These institutions include the municipalities of Tripoli and Mina in North Lebanon, Nabay in Mount Lebanon, and Deir Qanoun in South Lebanon, among other municipalities, schools, health centres, and bike stations. Providing clean energy to local authorities helps overcome electricity outages, eases the financial strain on municipalities, and ensures a more sustainable future at the local level, making public services more reliable and environmentally friendly!
