We make buildings that are enjoyable to use, beautiful to look at, and easy to understand. Since our early days in the late 1980s, we have grown from four to over four hundred people, with studios in London, Bristol, Oklahoma City Madrid, and Sydney, and in 2015 we were awarded the RIBA Stirling Prize for Burntwood School in London. We are known for our reinvention of buildings and places, including Tower Hamlets Town Hall, the Angel and Tea Buildings, Television Centre, the Barbican, and New Scotland Yard, as well a new build developments such as White Collar Factory, Soho Place, One Portwall Square, and 1 Broadgate. NEWS: Cavell Street receives planning Tower Hamlets Council has approved proposals for a major new life sciences building adjacent to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, London. Developed for Lateral, the new 10,200m² building on Cavell Street will provide market-leading, flexible lab space that aims to be an exemplar for London, with subdivisible, reconfigurable floorplates and generous ceiling heights that will cater for a range of tenants demands and ensure the buildings longevity. As previously announced by H.I.G. Capital in December 2024, the building will be occupied by Queen Mary University of London, Barts Life Sciences and Barts Health NHS Trust as the new Queen Mary BioEnterprises Innovation Centre, delivering 40,000 square feet of flagship incubator space as part of the Whitechapel Life Sciences District. NEWS: London Borough of Southwark approves AHMM designed over-station development. Last night, Wednesday 5th March, a joint venture between Places for London, Transport for London’s property company, and central London developer Helical plc, has received planning approval from the London Borough of Southwark for the development of a 15 storey purpose-built student accommodation scheme, comprising 429 studio apartments, and an adjacent nine storey building comprising 44 affordable homes, above Southwark station. AHMM director Philip Turner is quoted: “The Southwark Over Station Development will be a significant new local landmark at a busy junction. Led by our clients Helical and Places for London, and working closely with Heyne Tillett Steel, our design seeks to make the most of this long-standing opportunity site while addressing the complexities of its location above the tube station. NEWS: Angel Square Tops Out The team for the Angel Square celebrated the topping out of the building at a ceremony on site with the client, Tishman Speyer, the contractor, McLaren and the wider project team. Reinventing a prominent corner site in Islington, the mixed-use office led development incorporates new active frontages, builds over an existing underground station and repositions a public house while retaining 80% of the existing early 90s postmodern concrete structure. The existing internal structural grid also informs the facade design with articulated solid columns and ledges, supplemented by profiled metal spandrel panels and glazed terracotta and pre-cast concrete elements at ground floor. We are pleased to announce we have appointed construction firm JJ Rhatigan & Company as the principal contractor to lead the delivery of new homes at the Twyford Abbey development in Ealing. This appointment marks a major step forward in transforming the historic site into a thriving new community. The partnership will see the construction of 296 high-quality homes, 50% of which will be affordable. The project will also restore a Grade II-listed walled garden for community use and enhance the surrounding landscape, preserving existing trees and green spaces. Richard Cook, Chief Development Officer at Clarion Housing Group, said, "We have successfully worked with JJ Rhatigan on previous projects, and their strong focus on safety and community investment aligns with our vision for the Twyford Abbey site. This contract represents another key milestone in our commitment to delivering high-quality, sustainable homes while preserving the historical significance of the site."
