About us
Architype Ltd is an architectural practice working from offices in Hereford, London and Edinburgh. The UK’s leading architects for sustainable buildings, we design with an energy and commitment that changes lives for the better, by creating places and spaces that have a positive impact on the people who use them, and on the immediate and wider environment. Our remit is broad and always exciting. Whether we are working on a private residence or a factory, a hospice, school or university, we know we’re influencing people’s lives and that the buildings we design will be used for many years to come. It’s our conviction that we should push at boundaries, that there is a better way. It’s our intention that clients are liberated and empowered by the process of working with us and by the buildings we produce for them. Wherever possible, we carry out a period of thorough consultation, an immersion in the issues and needs of everyone who will occupy the building. We involve them in the process of describing their ambition and developing a plan that is informed by everyone’s contributions. This ensures we deliver the building they have a right to, a place they will be proud of. We love what we do - the profound sense of engagement that comes with each new project, the union of great design and credible sustainability, the pleasure we can bring, and the ripple effect each completed building has on society.

Today, we celebrate the resilience, skill, and impact of women in construction and architecture. Many of us have been fortunate to learn from and work alongside incredible women—mentors, tutors, colleagues, and leaders—who have shaped our careers and the industry as a whole. From inspiring educators like Fiona McLachlan, Rosie Parnell, Di Leitch, Lesley Lokko, and Fiona Bradley, to industry leaders like Ana Matic, Emma Osmundsen, and Jude Barber, their contributions continue to make a lasting impact. We also recognise the vital role of women in Passivhaus, sustainability, and community-led change, including those at Architype and beyond. Here’s to those who paved the way, those driving progress today, and those who will shape the future. Let’s not wait until March to say thank you - appreciate and support those around you every day. 💪🏗️🌱 #WomenInConstruction #IWD2025 #BreakingBarriers #BuildingSustainably

We are thrilled that Riverside Primary School for Perth & Kinross Council and Hub East Central Scotland has been shortlisted for the RIAS Awards 2025! Riverside Primary School is the first certified Passivhaus school in Scotland, underpinned by a brief to combine the client’s modern and supportive pedagogy with the Passivhaus standard; leading the way in Scottish Learning Estate Investment Programme (LEIP) funded school delivery. Having concluded an exceptional first year of post-occupancy building performance evaluation, Riverside Primary School stands proud as the first certified Passivhaus school in Scotland and demonstrates how impactful well-designed healthy learning environments can be. The Entopia Building has won the Building Performance Champion award and was also named the Project of the Year in Retrofit Workplaces category at the CIBSE #buildingperformanceawards 2025! The judging panel described the whole-life building performance of Entopia as exceptional and Architype are thrilled to have achieved our 7th CIBSE BPA for radically lower energy Passivhaus projects. The award submission was joint between Max Fordham LLP, BDP (Building Design Partnership Ltd) and Architype. The Entopia Building, is the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) headquarters, it's in-use energy performance is truly amazing and demonstrates how deep green retrofit can be delivered successfully. It has achieved an 87% energy reduction, through a holistic fabric-first approach, and is in line with achieving the reductions required to meet the UK NZCBS 2050 energy and embodied carbon targets. The project achieved EnerPHit certification and is on target to achieve BREEAM Outstanding and WELL Gold which we believe is a world first. With thanks to our many excellent collaborators including John French, Wendy Bishop, Peter Kelly, Anna Nitch-Smith, 3pm Project Management, Eve Waldron Design, Feilden+Mawson, BDP (Building Design Partnership Ltd), Max Fordham LLP, Envision Energy, Gardiner & Theobald LLP, MEAD Consulting Ltd, Cambridge Architectural Research and multiple other supply partners. It shows what is possible when high aspirations are set from the outset and championed by all involved. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eKnrzmqx 📷 - Jack Hobhouse and SOLK Photography

We know that healthy buildings support children in learning - so how can we design for the best possible indoor air quality? Today at the ASBP Healthy Building Conference 2025, co-owner Chryssa Thoua will be presenting new industry research from her PhD on the air quality of completed Passivhaus schools. By monitoring four schools for over a year, this study provides valuable insights into material choices, VOCs, and how design directly shapes well-being. Architype are incredibly proud and grateful to have been invited to the official opening of Mulberry Academy London Dock yesterday, attended by Her Majesty The Queen. We would like to offer a huge thank you to the Mulberry Schools Trust and CEO Dr Vanessa Ogden for orchestrating such an amazing community event. Designed by Architype the flagship Passivhaus secondary school provides a state-of-the-art learning environment that will empower generations of students and showcases the potential for healthy, light-filled and high performing spaces. Working closely with the Kier London & Thames Valley team, London Borough of Tower Hamlets and the Department for Education the school demonstrates what is possible in sustainable construction. On the day, Her Majesty The Queen met with members of our Senior Team including Steven Rankin, Associate Director. We were captivated by the local participation, community spirit, student performances and vibrant exhibitions of student work that came together to celebrate the momentous day. Last week co-owner and Associate Project Architect, Rory Martin along with Niall Hicks, Project Engineer at Walsh - Structural, Civil & Geotechnical Engineers took a visit to Mulberry Academy London Docks, at the invitation of Principal Designate Chris Harvey. Rory and Niall were impressed by the students' innovative designs and physical models for a sustainable school, showcased in their end-of-term exhibition. They shared the story of London Docks School, highlighting the collaborative design process from inception to completion. It was inspiring to see the enthusiasm of both students and teachers for their new, state-of-the-art school in the heart of London. The students' insightful questions about design, fire engineering, materials, and construction careers were particularly impressive. We look forward to future collaborations with the school.
