#DayoftheGirl Today, we honor the leadership, resilience, and creativity of girls worldwide. One such remarkable leader is Maria, a UNICEF youth advocate from Barbados who is making waves in the fight against climate change. After witnessing the environmental impact of littering, Maria turned her concern into action by creating Little Thoughts on Big Matters, an award-winning short film about the importance of reducing, reusing, and recycling. Through her Thoughts Squad by Maria platform on YouTube and Instagram, Maria continues to inspire her peers to protect the planet and take charge of their futures. She’s a powerful reminder that girls are not just the leaders of tomorrow—they are leading change today. On September 24th, our Executive Director, Lola A., moderated a powerful panel in partnership with UNICEF during the UN General Assembly to discuss Driving an Inclusive Green Transition – Closing the Climate Girls’ Gap. The session highlighted the immense potential of women and girls in the green economy and the importance of education in bridging the skills gap. Elevating girls’ voices, like Maria, could unlock between $15-30 trillion in economic potential globally. According to UNICEF’s research, adolescent girls are optimistic about the future despite the hurdles they face. It is up to all of us to ensure that their leadership is amplified, and their dreams are realized. Together, we can invest in a greener, more equitable world by supporting young changemakers like Maria. “I look at the Arkansas Mississippi Delta as my lifelong project,” says Kevin Martin, a former fellow from Arkansas and current facilitator, who cites texts like Bell Hooks’ Kentucky is My Fate, a text-based-dialogue in the curriculum, as transformative. “If it wasn’t for AYLF, I probably would not have come back to the Delta as early on. Especially being a part of a generation that was told to ‘get out, the Delta isn’t for you.’” AYLF Senior Fellow, Solcyre (Sol) Burga, spoke with several of the people who make AYLF possible in the Mississippi & Arkansas Delta, and who have been impacted by the opportunity. This story details the unique way a community can shape people, and how its young members have chosen to give back. Visit https://lnkd.in/gp8BQCmK to read the full story. AYLF is a program of The Aspen Institute that catalyzes the power of young people as changemakers by partnering with them, their families, and their communities to take action on their ideas for social solutions. #msdelta #ardelta #mississippidelta #arkansasdelta #clarksdalems #helenaarkansas #aspeninstitute #community #youngleaders #aspenyoungleaders

Are protectionist and nationalist economic policies hurting the American economy more than helping it? In his latest paper, Michael Strain, Director of Economic Policy Studies at the American Enterprise Institute and a member of the Aspen Economic Strategy Group, critically examines the effects of trade wars and nationalist economic strategies since 2017. Strain argues that the shift towards protectionism—deviating from the longstanding bipartisan support for trade liberalization and free-market economic policies—has failed to deliver on its promises, raising important questions about the effectiveness of such policies. This paper is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the real impacts of economic policies on trade, employment opportunities, and growth. Take a deep dive into Strain’s analysis and explore compelling reasons for why protectionism might be doing more harm than good. https://lnkd.in/gBPT8R7s
