💡 Did you know that steelmaking by-products currently emit around 49 million tonnes of CO₂ annually? And each year, approximately 250,000 tonnes of zinc-rich by-products end up in landfills because they cannot be recycled with existing technologies? 🌍♻️ We are proud to be a partner in the ZHYRON project, an EU-backed initiative addressing one of the steel industry’s biggest challenges: sustainable recycling of by-products and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. With the EU’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, the steel industry faces a target to reduce CO₂ emissions by 35%. The ZHYRON project is helping to meet this need by developing innovative circular economy solutions for a more sustainable future. He explained the two main methods of steel production: the #blastfurnace, which is carbon-intensive, and the electric arc furnace (#EAF), a more sustainable option that uses recycled #steelscrap and cleaner energy sources. Verden discussed the potential of #greenhydrogen as a fuel source in #steel production, highlighting its #capacity to reduce carbon emissions significantly. However, he acknowledged the challenges of scaling up hydrogen #production and ensuring its availability for widespread #industry use. As Chief Scientific Officer at Material Evolution, I am thrilled to announce a significant milestone in our mission to revolutionise the construction industry with sustainable solutions. Yesterday, we commissioned our first-of-a-kind production facility in Wrexham, Wales, with an annual capacity of 120,000 tonnes. This achievement brings us closer to our goal of reducing global CO₂ emissions by 1 gigaton by 2040. Our innovative alkali fusion process enables the creation of ultra-low carbon cement derived from industrial waste, cutting CO₂ emissions by up to 85% compared to traditional OPC. Langh Tech has partnered with Damen Shipyards Group and Atal Solutions for the first commercial installation of our OCC system on four bulk carriers! We are looking forward to this project and utilizing the unique life-cycle approach that we have developed, which reduces CO2 emissions while creating monetary value. How? Our innovative post-combustion process produces sodium carbonate out of the captured CO2. This sodium carbonate can then be sold, as it is used for diverse applications in other industries such as glass manufacturing. Thus, Langh Tech combines the environmental benefits of decarbonisation with creating additional value by selling and utilizing the waste product.
